That is a legit rave, I am jealous!

On a similarly less cool note, but equally as exciting (maybe) - Animal Planet is showing E-Vet Interns again, reruns of course, but fun nonetheless! I watch it and become, well, giddy.

Isn't it awesome to think we are going to BE interns one day? (well, some of us...guess not everbody will...)

I keep waiting for the giddy feeling to go but...yah...i🙂 Well, it's now sharing space with the "oh my gosh, what have I done" feeling, too. 😉

all of the interns i've ever met don't tend to think it's very awesome, especially when their 14 overnight ER shifts are even longer due to paperwork 😉

oh, they all wouldnt trade the experiences in for anything and say they've learned tons/would recommend it. i *definitely* plan on doing an internship and it's been very helpful to have their perspective (both from current interns and vets who did an internship)

Laaa, hello 🙂

Although I work 40+ hour weeks, I recently had a great week long break to go to Senior/Beach week with my friends. I graduated high school in May, and moved out of my parents' house two days afterwards. Now I rent a room in one of my friend's houses closer to DC-- I previously lived in Annapolis, MD.

AND. Hopefullyhopefullyhopefully, I'll hear from WARL soon (Washington Animal Rescue League) about volunteering in their animal hospital, or doing anything quite frankly. Have to get these experiences rollin'.

So yeah, there's my rave. I'm pretty lucky :]

Being on the Pathology service for the time between when the class of 2011 graduated and the class of 2012 starts in clinics is awesome. For the senior party weekend I was on Internal Medicine. Though I loved that too, a lot of my friends are on it now, and I have to say I'm really thankful for the hours in Pathology compared to what they're doing! 😀

I saw a Puli for the first time in the clinic today. I'm still giggling. It had this habit of running up to you, body-slamming you sideways, and then rolling over onto its back and wiggling around for attention.

Every time it rolled over, I had to convince myself that yes, somewhere down in that mess of a mop, there's a head, four legs, and a tail.

Too cute.

My family had a graduation celebration for me and my girlfriend tonight. We had a fabulous meal at Buca di Beppo, and then my grandparents gave us tickets to GLEE on Tuesday!! AHHHHH I'm SO excited!! 😍

Thanks guys! Also-our commencement speaker wasn't exactly LGBT friendly-so as my own little protest I queered my graduation outfit...haha this is what I wore under my gown; just the top of the shirt peaked out and I wore the beads with my honor's cords. My whole family also wore rainbow bracelets.

Great little way to protest. 🙂 But so sorry the speaker was a dud. Ugh. I wish I had a magic wand to get rid of discrimination.

My rave - I have interviews! After almost almost 2 months of job searching with no results, I got a call this morning offering me two interviews on Wednesday! Yay! There's hope yet!

👍 I hope you didn't just hide it under your cap 'n gown. I'm in MN, and this whole legislative season with the marriage amendment crap was just so depressing..... (even to this fairly conservative old guy).

And, since I know from the C25K thread that you've been losing weight ... I will just toss this out in what I hope is a non-creepy way: 👍👍 on the weight loss. Looking great! Even more incentive for me to keep running hard.

Thanks guys! And LIS, not creepy at all-what's creepy is how a kid with his arms covered in tattoos driving a beat-up old Mustang at the gas station yelled out of his car to ask me if I had a boyfriend...heh. Totally not used to that.

Coquette, congrats on the job interviews!!

What about clinics? That would mean interacting with the public. Can you keep them all for that?

Doubt it. But that's 2.5 years from now so I'm not really giving it much thought at this point. Also the wonderful thing about piercings is they are easily removed. And perhaps when I get to clinics I will have grown out of my affinity for them.

I don't know that any woman, straight or lesbian, is ever used to that. I mean obviously cat calling and obnoxious attention drawing is such a solid, guaranteed approach to attracting women. And to think it's only taken several million years for such tactful male charm and finesse to evolve 😉

..... luckily there are still a few guys out there with just a smidge more tact.

Game of Thrones season finale just downloaded !! 😀

Don't tell me what happens! Boyfriend got me started on the series and now I'm reading the book before I watch it with him. Ahhhhh! It's so good!

The sun came out again today, after 3 days of heavy rain. I had a job interview, went for a lovely run, and came home.

Two hours later, I have a job. 😀 Water quality testing and sustainable land use public outreach with the municipal government. Yay!

Just called an equine vet to shadow and the receptionist said they definitely do that! I need to call back to speak to the right person, but it looks promising! And it's a huge hospital, state-of-the-art, and really cool for my first exposure to equine medicine.

Another rave: may have found a legit large animal vet. Need to do some research.

And yet another: I am LOVING my new job. I'm racking up the hours like crazy (forty hours a week job! + shelter 1 day/week + behaviorist 1 day/week). And I'm learning SOOOOO much. I've seen a dog with phenobarb toxicity, a cat with pleural effusion, IMHA, codes, emergency tracheostomies; I've run CBCs and done X-rays and CT scans, calculated drug doses, set up IV fluids, got hugged by a woman who thanked me for taking care of her dog that had three seizures in one day (nearly made me cry), helped with triage calls, and so many other things...and it's only my third week! I am so thankful for this opportunity--I can't even tell you how much I'm enjoying it! And 90% of the people there love to teach. I ask one question, and they talk about why they use this drug instead of this one and the biochemistry of the mechanism, and how the disease affects the body in the dog vs. the cat. AMAZING!

That does sound amazing! Congrats!! 😀

I rode my horse today - like RODE. 60 minutes of fantastic work. We were both covered in sweat and I was holding back happy tears when we finished. I will never ever take a sound horse for granted again!!

That's amazing!! Not that I have experience, but I'm sure it's an awesome feeling!

My SO and I moved this past weekend. It's an incredibly nice place, especially compared to the place we lived in together 2 years ago, and both places we had individually last year. I can actually use my kitchen again and not worry about dirty counters, dishes left out for 4+ days, or dogs jumping at me. We have 3 bedrooms... a master, a guest, and a third that we have set up as an office. Let's just say I'm so happy that my living, dining, study, and bed rooms are not all in the same room any more.

One downside is that the carpet in all rooms is the same light blue color, all of the trim is white, and all of the walls are a lighter blue. I'm now looking at cheap/creative ways to add color to the walls, so if any of you have suggestions, let me know!!

Vinyl decals? Not the cheapest, but cool.

Thrift store paintings, old LP covers... I also like getting a card that I really like, putting a nice mat around it and popping it in a frame. Instant artwork!

When I worked in a kennel, we used to board a pair of Pulis... I adored them, but the amount of work the owners had to put into maintaining those dreads was killer! The first time they came in, I was all, "Ooh... want!" By the time they left, I'd amended that with "...to admire from afar." 😉

I have 15 piercings and they are fine with it at LSU.... I'm just sitting in a classroom, I'm not dealing with the public or anything. Other people in the class have tattoos and things and facial piercings (I just have my tongue and both of my nostrils) and no one seems to care.

Ah, good to know. I was concerned about having to cover a tattoo on my wrist and have been considering re-piercing my nose. It fell out and closed up while I was sleeping and I've been just waiting for the right moment to get it re-done. I was thinking I'd have to make sure it was healed enough before I interview or wait until after.

You've definately got me beat! The most I ever had was 14, I've taken most of them out since due to hypersenitivity to metal. I'm still pretty dissapointed about that. I was told by a friend who is a piercer that I could try titanium, but I develop skin reactions from everything (detergent, latex, cleaning products, etc), so I'm doubtful.

Week two of my quest to shoot 5000 pucks this summer is going well. I find that I can't make it out there 5x/week to shoot 100 shots/day (get home after dark from the lab sometimes) but i can sure do 4x/week and 125-150 shots per day!

I'm glad I'm doing it on inline skates rather than shoes. I feel like it helps with translating the shooting weight transfer from asphalt to ice.

My shot is already 1000x better than it was 2 weeks ago, and I've been playing for 25 years! 😍

I know I'm way late in responding but had to - I have a puli 🙂 Freaking awesome aren't they?! She's kept in a puppy cut though --- she acts as though she really dreads (pun intended) long hair. 😀

What exactly does a Puli look like under all that hair? I've never seen one sans the dreads!

You must post a picture!

And what exactly do you do to maintain a Puli's dreads? Is it a wash and dry kind of thing? I can't imagine combing through that mess!

We had a Komondor come to a pre-vet dog wash once. In order to wash the dreads you do it like laundry. Put soap on them and then rub them together. Then we had to rinse them and ring them and squeeze them really well to get all of the soap out. You have to separate the dreads in order to keep the fur from becoming matted. To separate them you just pull them apart. I was scared to do it at first but you do it pretty aggressively. It's apparently the same way that people deal with dreads in their hair. The woman who owned the Komondor was Jamaican and had dreadlocks herself. She taught us how to wash, rinse and separate the dreads. That was by far the hardest dog to wash!

I get to do the ultrasounds on our heifer herd when fall semester starts, so I can diagnose pregnancy 😀

aaand I got to explore around a cows abdomen during a surgery to correct a left displaced abomasum (this makes #4)

In the past week I've:
- Gotten a job
- Gotten into vet school
- Possibly found a subletter for my apartment in Halifax
- Possibly found a place to live in Charlottetown (thank you, New Foundland!)
- More or less totally rearranged my life

Good times!

So this isn't a rave so much as it's a funny...my dad has recently gone back to school after working 20+ years in an iron foundry to become a history teacher. We're sitting here together at the kitchen table and I'm helping him with his pre-algebra homework while my mom's at work. He's working on decimals and fractions and as I was helping him with something I explained it in terms of significant figures because that was easier for me to explain. Then I realized that I was making it more complicated that it needed to be so I said "But yeah, you don't need to know that so you don't have to worry about the significant figures," and he was like "Yeah, she's at work anyway." My dad's funny.

Anyone else notice that the ratio of RANTS:RAVES increases during the school year and decreases during the summer?

Makes a good GRE question.

RANTS:RAVES is like: Winter:

a) Mondays
b) February
c) Happy Hour
d) Summer
e) Organic Chemistry

I hate you, because now I'm having a hard time resisting the urge to go back and make a chart of how many rants/raves there were each month since those threads started............. :meanie:

But.... the answer better be C. "Happy Hour" is always an appropriate answer. 🙂

I think if you want you can let them mat, right? It doesn't hurt anything other than they don't have the cool dreads look.

I also thought that you can cut them apart instead of pull them apart, if you find it quicker or more palatable.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on those?

I would say that it would be bad to let the entire dog get matted. It would probably get too heavy and painful. And the dog would probably not be able to move as well if their sides and faces matted hardcore.

And I have no idea about cutting them...the owner with the dreads told us to pull them apart and hers looked pretty nice so I figured I'd listen. 🙄

True - it depends on the dog and the coat. Often, the coats will "self dread" and you only need to maintain them. One of the traditional ways to form dreads is to tear/cut out the puppy hair from underneath and divide the coat into around inch separations. You can let them mat by themselves, but have to make sure the hair doesn't start really pulling on the skin. This isn't a concern most of the time - but occasionally you will get a puli that tends to develop several large mats instead of the corded look.

Let me find a good pic of her and I'll post it 🙂

I am going to agree that Happy Hour is always the answer, SOV...

Don't resist. I give you permission to research my idea as long as we co-author the paper (i.e. you do all the work and I get 1/2 the credit).

If I understand academic papers right, that means your name will go first since you're the PR, and my name will go last since I do all the work?

Rock.
