Hello all

Wondering if you all could provide some suggestion whether I will have any chance as a reapplicant as someone who previously withdrew from a DO program.

I withdrew due to many factors, one being personal as my grandmother became ill and it affected my move in and was on my mind during school. Also this in combination with shifting to a new state far away for start of school was not ideal.

I want to become a physician still, and I now learned that going to a state school/ school closer to my family is important.

Last time I applied I had 3.6 GPA and 501 MCAT. 1000+ hours medical assistant / scribe, 2000+ hours research (2 publications), couple hundred of volunteering

If I was to just improve the mcat to 510+ would I have a chance or would my app be Dead on Arrival

Thanks

I'm no admissions expert by any means so take my opinion with a mole of atoms but even if you did retake the MCAT and scored a 510+, I think a lot of DO and MD medical schools will be wary to admit you if you dropped out once even if for totally valid reasons. Maybe Caribbean schools would gloss over that fact but just because you could doesn't mean you should (and with the realization of having a close support network being important to you makes that choice an even more unwise one). I'm sorry you're in this situation and I hope things only go up from here.

I did matriculate, I voluntarily withdrew but did fail one course, the rest are passes or withdrawals

What has changed to make you feel ready to go to med school now? Was your withdrawal just last year? What if you only got into a school far from home?
All these questions are not to grill you, but to encourage you to consider carefully before applying again.
If you are still grieving, if you are still insecure about leaving home, if you need time to get back to normal, then it's too early.
There's nothing wrong with working, saving some money, and waiting a bit.

I will also add, @wysdoc 's questions are the obvious questions that anyone in an admissions role is going to ask. If you failed or withdrew from classes in medical school, then it doesn't give other schools confidence you would pass "this time." That's just the nature of things. Schools are reluctant to accept students with academic difficulties, and students are most often dismissed for failing their courses.

Why didn't you take a LOA?

Can't sugar coat this, you might need a SMP.
Chances for readmission are best at your former school.

In the meantime, work on coping skills.
