I am a re-applicant and I applied late. The biggest question I have is if I should retake the MCAT? The second question is if I do retake the MCAT can I apply early with my original MCAT score and then send out my scores once I get them?

Credentials

MCAT: 27Q
GPA:3.80
Shadowing: Primary care physician, RN, PA, and currently an Oncologist (In addition I am trying to publish a Case Report with him)
EMT-Basic certified
Volunteered heavily with several organizations;however, very little volunteer work in a clinical setting.
Research: 3 years in total in two different labs.

I would consider a retake...what was your distribution? EMT basic isn't a clinical setting or clinical exposure (i really honestly don't know for sure)?

you can also reapply and send scores once they come in after you submit your primary.

Distribution? I received a 9 in each section; I'm not sure if that's what you meant?

Where did you apply? Did you get any interviews? What is your state of residence? MD only?

Did you apply DO? That would have been my first advice to you with that MCAT score. It is low for MD, but just fine for DO.

just mark on AMCAS that you are retaking your MCAT, and the schools that you apply to will put you on hold until your new scores come in. But the new scores better be significantly higher!

It would be best if you can have your scores before picking your school list. Maybe you can do the trick of applying to one school on the first day that AMCAS opens up (also apply AACOMAS, and the Texas system if you have any ties to or want to go to school in Texas). That way your transcripts get verified early. Then when you get your new MCAT scores back you can craft your list of schools that match your stats.

Good luck. With a better score and the right list do schools, you should have no problem.

I'm a Texas resident, but i missed the deadline to apply to most Texas schools. I applied to four schools; Colorado, Iowa, Arizona, and Saint Louis. I interviewed at saint Louis and Iowa. I was wait listed at saint Louis and rejected by Iowa. I originally applied to 10 primary schools but couldn't afford to do all the secondary applications due to financial constraints. Plus I felt that applying late was a major disadvantage.

Apply early and with a well written application to all TX schools.

This is one of the few times I'll disagree with my colleague. The TX schools tend to be quite competitive, and your MCAT is hurting you.

I'm a believer in applying with the best possible package, and if that means waiting an extra year while you re-take and do well on MCAT, then so be it. You can work the extra year and save up some money too.

Apply early and with a well written application to all TX schools.
