Re-applying to US schools vs. SGU

So I applied to 20 U.S. schools this year. I was interviewed at two schools and waitlisted at both. I am still on the waitlist at these schools. I am considering applying to SGU for Fall 2011 (I would have to apply very soon) or January 2012.

My stats: 3.5 cGPA, 3.4 sGPA, 27 MCAT. I am very discouraged by the lack of love from U.S. schools this year. And I would really like to get going with my medical education.

Should I re-apply to U.S. schools or apply to SGU?

I would reapply TBH, your stats make you competitive for many DO schools if you apply broadly, or just retake the MCAT, score 32+ and apply MD... but do whatever it takes to stay in the states. The match 4 years from now is not looking good for FMGs, and some of those traditional FM/IM/Peds spots SGU grads take may become fewer and far between than they once were, with all the new expansion of US schools.

Many talk about how they want to "get going", or don't want to waste time reapplying and dealing with the BS of med admissions. I can sympathize with this point, but remember, med school is a six fig investment and you really want to maximize your chances of becoming a licensed physician in the US in the specialty of your choice. Spending 1-2 years to improve is the smarter financial decision and long term decision, even if starting right away seems like the better short term one...

I agree; you pointed out a lot of the issues I have been thinking about. I will re-apply to DO schools and see what happens. Maybe I will complete the SGU application for the January 2012 term...that way it is a backup to the U.S. schools. This is my second cycle so I really want it to happen this year, even if it means I have to go to the Caribbean.

You should consider retaking the MCAT and/or post-bac. Caribbean is a last resort.
