re: LIJ vs. Jacobi
Started by Jason26
uh, i'm not sure about that...i think they are on par with a slight edge to LIJ BUT they are so completely different in terms of working environment..LIJ serves long island/queens....where as jacobi is this massive municipal hospital (you run the show, for better or for worse)....
Jacobi is mostly IMG with a few einstein kids who decided to stay
whereas LIJ is most US nationals with 1/3 IMG...
jacobi has a new hospital opening...don't know when exactly, everyone gives you a different story...but i think it will get only better because the old hospital is a piece of s**t...

The guy asked about reputation and fellowships and not how many IMGs each program has. As an Einstein student, rotationg through both places, I assure you that Jacobi is way above LIJ in all aspects, including fellowship placement, research opportunities, connections, quality of its faculty, access to medical school, etc. No contest.
if this what he wanted....
prestige - jacobi (had it back in the day) but not that good right now... (known for ER but not really for IM)
LIJ - okay name, good research funding...
fellowships - neither has a list that blows you away for fellowships...that said, both get people into cards, gi...
my point is that it really comes down to locale (long island versus bronx) and your fellow residents (locals versus foreign mds)...

I am also an Einstein student and do not agree with the previous poster---
If I were to choose the answer would be LIJ hands down. Jacobi was once the power-house of the Einstein institution now that honor is held by Montie. LIJ is a much less toxic environment than Jacobi---wonderful nurses/ancillary staff etc whereas Jacobi is a HHC hospital with horrible nurses who are backed by a strong contract that allows them to do very little (other than page you).
I think you'll find that their fellowship placements are quite similar with the exception of Cardiology (that edge goes to Jacobi---and its the only edge). Choose where you'll be happiest---if it were me the answer without question would be LIJ.

It is not only cardiology, but different people have different opinions.
If you do not want to do a fellowship then go to LIJ. However, JAcobi fellowship list is better than LIJ list. And yes, they had to overcome being IMGs and still manage to do better.
Where is the difference? I think it is in their locations. LIJ is a community hospital with not such big names on their faculty payroll while Jacobi has a very special bonding with Einstein Medical School. Basically, every professor at Einstein is also a faculty member at Jacobi. Besides better teaching rounds, that also opens a lot of research opportunities just across the street (from the medical school), which then leads to better LORs and connections, connections, connections...
Plus, at Jacobi you learn way more than at LIJ (greater autonomy...everybody is service).
Computer system? Jacobi won 3 years in the row for the best computer system in the country while at LIJ they still have a paper written orders.
Thay are also adding a complete paperless system (paperless admission and progress notes) at Jacobi.

What the hell are you talking about? Why are you so freaking dogmatic...I mean you have taken school pride to a whole new level....
You're showing how ignorant you are by posting something like that...I interviewed at both places, and like I said they both do fine for fellowships...
I agree the with question guy, the edge for Cards is Jacobi...But LIJ people get into Cards also....
Secondly, Autonomy...is good for some but not good for others..I mean some people learn better with guidance....but others like being able to run the show...
All I think with Jacobi is new hospital...it will be phenomenal...but who knows when that will be...and if the ancillary stays the same, it will still suck...
Like we said, it depends mainly on locale (bronx does not appeal to everyone, neither does long island)....and municipal versus non municipal...
for me, I ranked LIJ (not high, but its on my list)...i didn't rank jacobi...
ps if you can, consider monte, it definately is the most solid of the 3....

that was fast...actually, lij is affiliated....
actually if you learned along the way, affiliation means crap...LIJ has its own funding for research...

if you rotated at LIJ then how can you say that people don't get fellowships there?

this is the only thing i have issues with, is that you did say that...
secondly my point about affiliation is that the faculy are separate...your diploma says einstein, and you can take rotaions at the other affiliates, but that's about the extent of it....
...look raj, who cares? as you said, to each their own...my advice to people is choose happiness...i think we all agree on that...
good luck to all of you....

Forgot to add the sentence behind it??? Taking my sentences out of contest is is not cool...🙂
I never said LIJ residents do not get fellowships.

Having also rotated through both I'd have to say that there is a reason Jacobi ONLY attracts FMG's. There are reasons for shifts like this and it is not all location (Montie is in a worse neighborhood and attracts a much higer caliber of residents).
So according to you, LIJ is also better than Bellevue/NYU since Jacobi and Bellevue are close cousins (both are the city hopsitals) with the same structure and the same type of nurses.
Since when we are chosing residencies by the type of nurses that work there???
BTW, Jacobi is way less malignant than Monte.
