Hi y'all,

I'm an undergraduate pre-med student at the univ of michigan entering my junior year. I have almost all my pre-med requirements completed, but I obtained a C+ and a C in Orgo 1 and Physics 1, respectively. But I got a B in Orgo 2 and I'm currently taking Physics 2 at a community college at home. I've yet to take the mcat. I plan to next June. My advisor said if i were to retake these classes at UMich, they would not affect my gpa; they would only show up on my transcript with that new letter grade. My question is, would it be wise to retake these classes and get a higher grade to hopefully prove to med schools that I know the material, or not retake them at all? These grades obviously took a toll on my cumulative and science gpa.

Any kind of advice would be appreciated. Thanks,
Maz

Take phys 140 like a real man or woman (I'm assuming you didn't), and that would replace your 125 grade.

Ace the MCAT and biochem 415 if you'd rather not waste the time retaking classes, or otherwise yeah I might retake 210.

EDIT: Do not take the Chem 351, it's really hard.

EDIT AGAIN: I know people who retook 210/215 for the same reason you have, so it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Hi there,

TBH...I don't know what your GPA is currently, and I don't know what sort of academic trend you have. I think that contributes a good amount towards if you should retake it. That being said, I am not sure how allopathic schools treat retakes, as DOs have the whole retake policy established.

That being said, I had a few bad quarters myself. a couple B-'s, and I think a C or two during college. What I had to do was ROCK the MCAT (see "Rags to Riches" in the MCAT forum if you want to know what happened/I did), killed your upperdivision classes junior/senior year, and took two years off to get some experience and perspective on healthcare. I applied and had little issues getting interviews, and acceptances.

Good luck!

The hardest part, is self-diagnosis: How do you prevent bad grades from happening again?

I would say it's more for your benefit for the future and the MCAT than what medical school's think.

Well look you have proven to yourself that you had an upward trend in Orgo, you are assuming that by retaking your C's you will receive a higher grade...you are assuming that, well what if that does not happen? I am not being a pessimist but I will shine some optimism I received two C's in Orgo both semesters, and two A's in both semesters of physics taking them at the same time, arguably two of the hardest pre-med classes but I am constantly on that Nike Trend, my grades went from solid, a little down (due to Orgo), and then shot right back up.

KILL the MCAT, and strive for that "nike" trend
