Re-taking step 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why the hell would you want to?!? It is horror enough just to take it one time. Be happy you passed. If this is in reference to getting into a residency program, just make a lot of calls to each program(very time consuming but worth it), tell them your situation and see if they encouraged you to apply there. If so, Go for it!! Somebody will pick you up, after all most programs these days are picking up IMG's like candy in this country. So, if you are AMG or IMG your chances are almost equal, its not like it use to be where being an AMG was "Golden", the only difference now is that AMG's owe an average of $200,000.00 after medical school where as most IMG's owe $0.00 🙂
If the question was meant for finding a fellowship and you are already in residency then I would say you should still be ok unless you are applying for a competitive fellow ship. In this case do damage control, maybe take 1 year off to get publication for research in the field you are going to apply in(in this case research publication greatly enhances your post residency training resume). Also, see if your program has direct contact with a local or nearby fellowship program(s). If you are in good standings with your PD he/she can really work magic for you on your behalf.😀
My point is, getting a low or less preferred score on Step 3 examination will not necessarily hamper you if you work hard and are persistent. Hope this answers your question. Good Luck!!
PS: No you cant retake a step after passing it, unless you run pass the 7 year limit. Then you have to take all 3 steps over again. 😱
