This ridiculous. Everyone (even premeds) I talk to seems to be obssessed with Harry Potter, and they freak out when I tell them that I've never read any of the Harry Potter books. I'm more into science fiction/nonfiction rather than magical fantasy crap.

A few weeks ago, I saw on a blog that Harry Potter is a "must read" for premeds, and many people who commented to his post seemed to strongly agree. What's up with all the hype? Did YOU read Harry Potter?

Of course I did. It is basic study material for the MCAT. Don't bother applying to medical school until you have read them.

why would it be a "must-read" for pre-meds?

I can imagine people making a loud deal about it irl just to present themselves as funny/entertaining/bombastic, but really...who cares

I have heard of people whose interviewers have asked them what the last book they read was or w/e, and harry potter is a pretty light-hearted answer.

did you seriously come to an online forum to ask us if you should read harry potter?

its a great read, but it isn't necessary for premeds. there is no cure to cancer hidden within the magical texts.

Exactly what went through my mind.

They're great fantasy books. They are used to expand your imagination. That's it. It's like Game of Thrones.

It's obvious; you need to know all the spells for your MCAT and medical school interview

the only possible correlation i can see is: premeds = nerds = harry potter readers. i love HP so in this scenario "nerd" is not a bad thing 😉

I hope I don't get asked "What is the last book you've read for fun?" in an interview because they only thing I'd be able to answer is Harry Potter.

Reducio Neoplasia?

This is hilarious because I was reading it this morning and almost was late to class because of it. I don't think it's a must read, but they are brilliantly written. I have read the whole series countless times and I'm still finding these small connections throughout the books that I missed before. If you have the time it wouldn't hurt to read them and see for yourself🙂

I read the 2nd book in the 5th grade (I got it in a Christmas exchange). Ever since, I've been hooked. I have every movie and book; I have a few T-shirts, the Marauder's Map, and the Elder wand. Huge fan 🙂 This is the first time I've heard that HP is a must-read for pre-meds, although I know a lot of pre-meds who are fans of the series. My school even has an English class just for Harry Potter. If you're not interested in the series, it's really not a big deal. I'm not a huge fan of Twilight, even though I read the first 3... actually, that's a bad example.😉

Tread lightly, young grasshopper. You never know which adcomm member might be an Adjunct Animagus Instructor for Hogwarts School of Medicine.

I mentioned Harry Potter and it was a positive reaction 😀

I feel like saying that you read Harry Potter might not be as relevant these days. Now if you say it was the last book read, it could mean it's been 3 years since you read a book 😉

People can re-read books, man. I was re-reading the Artemis Fowl series.

Wait... You seriously asked this question?

Imagine Croc being your doctor operating on you

Common sense is kinda important. Maybe consider a new career.

I reads Harry Potter now. Am I get into medicle skool soon? I hear that Derek Zoolander helps peeple like me reads.

damn! the only thing i'd be able to answer is whip smart.

......😕

You could just watch Game of Thrones and claim that you read the first book. It's not ethical, but it's still plausible.

Yes, reading Harry Potter could help you get into medical school,

But the Lord of the Rings will most certainly help you get into medical school.

😛

It's not a requirement for Med School but more for a happy childhood for our generation 😛

I've read them all cover to cover and I can recite most of the lines from the movies. Get on our level, muggle.

 funny how you people misinterpret what I'm asking here. I'm not asking if I should read Harry Potter or not. I'm just surprised that so many premeds find it as a "must-read" and that I'm annoyed because so many people make a fuss about it. Interpretation is quite important...VR section on the MCAT doesn't look too good for you. Maybe you should consider a new career?

Harry Potter?

Never heard of him...

 I did indeed read the LOTR only because it has so many allusions to history!

Potions (aka General Chemistry) with Snape almost made me quit the premed track. That guy is tough not to mention a jerk

Nope. Never read the books. Never seen the movies....
OP, do you have the link to that blog? I'm curious as to why it's a must read.

Couldn't agree with you more 😀

But in the end, he wasn't a bad guy.

Harry Potter books are like contemporary vampire books but for nerds instead of *****s.

There were only like two vampires in the entire book and they were background characters / Quirren's turban explanation or something.

So can we get a definitive answer on this question from an ADCOM member? I need to know if I should read harry potter or not. I need to get into med school

Forgot to mention my stats, 4.0 43 MCAT if that helps your decision

Nice stats but depends on which house you were in.
Gryffindor = Harvard medical school. Hufflepuff = hello Carribean med school

You'd be beyond surprised on what I've scored on VR. I forgot that the VR section decides if you make a good doctor btw.. Keep the common sense going champ. I know you're a little insecure of how many ppl have made fun of you on this thread. It's okay little guy.

I mean I may be biased as I attend Hogwarts School of Medicine, but IMO it is pretty useful. Glad a Pre-Med forum could help with this tough decision.

HA! You phony, Hogwarts doesn't have a school medicine You have to go to St.Mungos to get a degree in healing.

Jesus, next thing you know, people will tell me that Princeton-Plainsboro isn't a real teaching hospital.

I would read them if I were you OP. They're not masterpieces but they're very entertaining. They're also just culturally ubiquitous for us millennials (as you pointed out). Maybe similar to listening to the Beatles for the baby boomers. Who knows, you might be on a date 10 years from now and the topic will come up.

Strange, I've never met any med students that have ever wanted me to read Harry Potter. Read them anyways because I find Snape to be an awesome character, some books are better than others, the worst book in my opinion was the 5th one, the 7th is the best book by afar.

I had several classmates that were urging me to read the Twilight series several times, I liked the first movie but fell asleep during the second movie and have never seen the other films. So far I haven't felt like reading the books yet.

Maybe you should just ignore what people you obviously have nothing in common with tell you and just focus on your own studies?

Comparing Twilight to Harry Potter is like comparing Ben Jonson to Shakespeare. Who's Ben Jonson you ask? Exactly.

In any case, OP, Harry Potter is the best selling series of books in the history of the world. Albeit marketing powers are much more powerful today than they were say during the Victorian period, but still, Harry Potter is popular for a reason. They are pure, sweet escapism. Don't gripe about "fantasy" vs. "Sci-fi," or w/e. It's moot. Harry Potter is an experience of sheer pleasure that it would be a sin to cheat yourself out of.

 nicely done

Reading Harry Potter is like listening to bed time stories. It's wonderful, but I'm afraid it has nothing to do with medicine.

I would argue that it does. The books have a consistent theme about rising above one's own self-interests for the good of others.

That and I learned you should always try to mend bones instead of simply removing them because regrowing bones is nasty business
