My brother works four days a week as a dentist and made 200K his second year in the office in a small town (11,000 people). He tried to talk me out of med school to go to dental school. I just don't really want to be digging around in people's mouths all day. I want more variety and more options available to me. Plus I just like medicine more than dentistry. And money isn't everything... Generally people that have it just spend it and a person who makes $200K and spends it wisely can live as well as someone who makes $400K and doesn't spend it wisely.

I love your attitude. Saving money is key.

I've been trying to clean myself up in general. It's not just the weed. I'm trying to live a healthier life. I run 4 miles a day. I lift 5 times a week. I try to eat healthier food. It's just stuff like that.
Having a clearer mind doesn't suck - all the time. Getting high was a big part of my life, though. It's how I connected with a lot of my friends. And now, I can hang out with them and I like 'em and care about 'em but it's just different. It's stuff like that...
I wish I had figured out that I can think a lot clearer off of weed, coke, speed, shrooms, etc. back when I was in school, though, because I am definitely paying the consequences for my bad grades now.
Physically, I feel a lot better, too. Maybe I was just feeling a little old, I don't know.

Just keep in mind that orthodontics and for that matter all of the dental specialites are EXTREMELY competitive to get into. If you aren't top 3-4 in your class then better get used to the idea of being a general dentist. IMHO it would be foolish to set out to be an orthodontist without a very inherent interest in dentistry. Chances are good you'd end up as a general dentist. As previously stated, don't make a career decision based strictly on money. You've gotta go with your heart.

On another note, I did not intend to offend you by saying that some people may feel dentistry is beneath their potential. You shouldn't be so defensive. For some people being a practicing doctor is beneath their potential. In my case, I wouldn't want to be a dentist. It isn't all about money you know. Some of it is about being able to truly help people and save lives. Anyway, I get the feeling this thread is a trolling thread.

Oh, I imagine that the average of 100k for doctors and dentists is true. However, practictioners generally have a CHOICE how much they want to make. Cardiologists can make 100k or 1MM+, based on personal preference (and to some extent, talent).

I am defensive about dentistry. Its a techinical field NOT unlike general/specialized surgeryl (or any non-internal meds/nondiagnostic specialty). yet gets crapped on by docs (cuz dentists make more by workin less...?)

But see, occasionally i did, but getting high really stopped being all that fun. when I first started it was cool. I mean, you'd get the giggles and the munchies and how can you forget when you used to step outside during class to spark up that one hitter? Or when you first got someone else high? oh damn, that was the sh¡t! but after a while, it just stopped being my steez.
I'm not going to hate on you for doing it. And I'm still down for doing it once in a blue moon, but I can't be about getting high day in and day out anymore.

Actually ortho's do make a decent chunk after they've spent time practicing etc.. The dentist salaries you have listed OP are a little off the mark though. Go talk to a few who are honest and you will see that what they are actually taking home is different (i.e. my Father in law owns a sucsessful practice here in Washington state and after taxes etc. brings home around 180K and that's after establishing his practice for 22 years in the area. Plus he pays a lot out of his own pocket to keep his hygenists happy by paying for vactions etc.. you get the point). You can work hard in any field and make a lot but with medicine you go into becuase you love it. I shadowed my Father in law and was absolutely bored out of my mind. Its a trade school skill and you do the same thing over and over again without any variety and you have to sit there and BS about your life over and over again with evey patient etc. In medicine I find a much more enjoyable work day. You have to decide what will make you happy. For me, definitely medicine. For you, dentistry works. Peace out

Anyway dermatologist probably make more than 400,000 average and I bet they don't work much more. With a comparable amount of chances of getting into either dermatology out of med school or orthodontics out of dental school.

I also wouldn't want to be a dermatologist, I need to have a job where I can really be excited about what I am doing, that is if I am going to spend 10 years of my life learning how to do it. (not to say some people can't be excited about dermatology or about orthodontics, it just isn't my thing)

Dude, that sounds cool and all, but the REAL job is LIVING OFF YOUR PARENTS. You work zero hours per week. Salaries vary widely, but you can be assured of making at least infinity dollars per hour. How's that for scalable income?
