i have notes from a successful dentist who came to lecture our premed club one day...if you want me to briefly type out and PM my notes to you i'll gladly do that?

Hmm, thought MDs had private practices too. Oh, they're in groups? Oh ok, funny, orthodontix join groups too. ur ignant.

yeah groups are becoming pretty common too, but most dentists own their practice

My brother works four days a week as a dentist and made 200K his second year in the office in a small town (11,000 people). He tried to talk me out of med school to go to dental school. I just don't really want to be digging around in people's mouths all day. I want more variety and more options available to me. Plus I just like medicine more than dentistry. And money isn't everything... Generally people that have it just spend it and a person who makes $200K and spends it wisely can live as well as someone who makes $400K and doesn't spend it wisely.

I love your attitude. Saving money is key.

Hmm, what about 2 days a week then?

ownership is a bad thing? esp if that thing is a pretty riskfree company and has a yummy cash flow with limited liability?

My wife is an orthodontist, and this is what I know:

- private practice average income = $420k, based on a survey by the American Assocation of Orthodontists
- average # days worked: 4
- average # hours worked per week: 32
- average malpractice insurance : <$5,000 per year

Extra pay to get Herpetic Whitlow?

I think I'd rather save lives.........

Yes. I can't figure out what the hell his point is. I'm amazed how prescient I was after just skimming this asshat's first post.
I'm getting pretty bored with SDN....

SDN is easier to handle when you're hi.

Become the chairman of Exxon. I hear you can make half a billion. Why go for the crumbs in dentistry or medicine.

I know it. I've been trying to get on that health tip, though, you know. Eating healthy, working out more, drinking less liquor, and cutting down on the herb. 10 years of it (I mean like wake and bake for a lot of that) and you know, it's just not the same. I miss getting the giggles and stuff and just sh¡t like that. I'm way more lucid now, too. It sort of sucks.
Pour out some of that 40 for me...

I've been trying to clean myself up in general. It's not just the weed. I'm trying to live a healthier life. I run 4 miles a day. I lift 5 times a week. I try to eat healthier food. It's just stuff like that.
Having a clearer mind doesn't suck - all the time. Getting high was a big part of my life, though. It's how I connected with a lot of my friends. And now, I can hang out with them and I like 'em and care about 'em but it's just different. It's stuff like that...
I wish I had figured out that I can think a lot clearer off of weed, coke, speed, shrooms, etc. back when I was in school, though, because I am definitely paying the consequences for my bad grades now.
Physically, I feel a lot better, too. Maybe I was just feeling a little old, I don't know.

Here's some context for the original post.

Just keep in mind that orthodontics and for that matter all of the dental specialites are EXTREMELY competitive to get into. If you aren't top 3-4 in your class then better get used to the idea of being a general dentist. IMHO it would be foolish to set out to be an orthodontist without a very inherent interest in dentistry. Chances are good you'd end up as a general dentist. As previously stated, don't make a career decision based strictly on money. You've gotta go with your heart.

Yes, the same report lists MD median salary at $148,495 working 5 days a week. I dont know any doctors making that little. Do you? From the handful of docs i know, its more like $200-500k.

In a simliar logic, you state the median dentist salary is 118,848 working 4 days a week. I dont know any dentists making that little. Do you? From the handful of dentists i know, its more like $200-500k.

Granted, I dont know practitioners who dont like money, i.e. nonprofit clinics and stuff.

I think you're suffering from an availability heuristic. That is, you're just saying "I dont know any people who make that much so it can't be true." Many doctors make around $148,000 and even less. On another note, I did not intend to offend you by saying that some people may feel dentistry is beneath their potential. You shouldn't be so defensive. For some people being a practicing doctor is beneath their potential. In my case, I wouldn't want to be a dentist. It isn't all about money you know. Some of it is about being able to truly help people and save lives. Anyway, I get the feeling this thread is a trolling thread.

jeb- once you stop smoking herb and spend time with people who still do all the time, you realize how boring your life used to be. my wakenbake friends do the same **** day in day out, are never down to go out, and spend way too much money on the herbals. i will forever be mota, but mota is no longer really a part of me.

Oh, I imagine that the average of 100k for doctors and dentists is true. However, practictioners generally have a CHOICE how much they want to make. Cardiologists can make 100k or 1MM+, based on personal preference (and to some extent, talent).

I am defensive about dentistry. Its a techinical field NOT unlike general/specialized surgeryl (or any non-internal meds/nondiagnostic specialty). yet gets crapped on by docs (cuz dentists make more by workin less...?)

But don't you still feel a little nostalgia for those days--at least the early days when it still felt like you were a hip little rebel?

that is deep. and i totally see the that you're right about the rest of it.

But see, occasionally i did, but getting high really stopped being all that fun. when I first started it was cool. I mean, you'd get the giggles and the munchies and how can you forget when you used to step outside during class to spark up that one hitter? Or when you first got someone else high? oh damn, that was the sh¡t! but after a while, it just stopped being my steez.
I'm not going to hate on you for doing it. And I'm still down for doing it once in a blue moon, but I can't be about getting high day in and day out anymore.

dbhvt said:

no doubt. but i realized that every time i smoked after that i was trying to get the same high that i used to get right when i started out. instead, i thought people were trying to kill me.

Ok. You two are officially hip in my book. I'm just impressed that you grew up pretty quickly. I'm a blue mooner myself, and have been pretty much a workaholic for the past few years, but now that I'm in... I find myself trying to nurture the old rebel streak, trying not to lose the younger crazy version of myself.

I love this thread! And I love you guys (jebus, demota, and dbhvt) for hijacking it! 😍 now what was I doing? Right, immunology final...

Actually ortho's do make a decent chunk after they've spent time practicing etc.. The dentist salaries you have listed OP are a little off the mark though. Go talk to a few who are honest and you will see that what they are actually taking home is different (i.e. my Father in law owns a sucsessful practice here in Washington state and after taxes etc. brings home around 180K and that's after establishing his practice for 22 years in the area. Plus he pays a lot out of his own pocket to keep his hygenists happy by paying for vactions etc.. you get the point). You can work hard in any field and make a lot but with medicine you go into becuase you love it. I shadowed my Father in law and was absolutely bored out of my mind. Its a trade school skill and you do the same thing over and over again without any variety and you have to sit there and BS about your life over and over again with evey patient etc. In medicine I find a much more enjoyable work day. You have to decide what will make you happy. For me, definitely medicine. For you, dentistry works. Peace out

I couldn't be excited about going to my job everyday knowing I am going to be straightening teeth or filling cavities.

Anyway dermatologist probably make more than 400,000 average and I bet they don't work much more. With a comparable amount of chances of getting into either dermatology out of med school or orthodontics out of dental school.

I also wouldn't want to be a dermatologist, I need to have a job where I can really be excited about what I am doing, that is if I am going to spend 10 years of my life learning how to do it. (not to say some people can't be excited about dermatology or about orthodontics, it just isn't my thing)

wait, do dermatologists really make more than 400K?

I thought it was like 170K. Could someone clarify

Dude, that sounds cool and all, but the REAL job is LIVING OFF YOUR PARENTS. You work zero hours per week. Salaries vary widely, but you can be assured of making at least infinity dollars per hour. How's that for scalable income?

 So true.

Looks like desired/jeb and mota are all grown up. How cute.

I realized several years ago that, yeah, when you're a 20-year-old college kid, it's all about experimenting and rebelling and being hip. Now, at 27, if I were to still do that stuff, I'd just be lame.
