I have been working through passages(VR as well as the sciences) and know the material but am having difficulty working through the understanding of the passages. I feel like I mentally zonk out when normally I am very actively reading. Is anyone going through or been through this? Any tips to remedy this? I know the obvious answer would be practice but I have been trying to get over the hump with very little improvement. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

1. Improve your working vocabulary
2. Familiarize yourself with basic concepts in different disciplines

Before I haphazardly read the passages and tried to extract the answers....I averaged 6's.

On the last few practice AAMC's I took I closed my eyes and took a 7 second break before each passage to mentally re-wire. You cannot think about the previous passage while you read the current one. My score improved to 10s and even an 11 on one. I did this on the real MCAT and had time left over. Do it.

Having a neophyte's understanding of most testable verbal material in art, natural sciences, etc. isn't that difficult and doesn't require tremendous effort.

Not really.
Even psychology has thousands of different topics.
It can be about memory, personality, development, social interactions, and the list continues. If you have more than a year, then sure, it may help you a lot by reading lots of articles, but you cannot familiarize yourself with ALL THE TOPICS as you mentioned. It is impossible unless you majored in everything in ur underg.

At what point did I mention that?
