Lithium also seems to be especially effective during the depressed phase of manic-depressive illness. About 60 to 80 percent of patients with acute depression respond to the drug, although full response might take up to four weeks.
As for long-term treatment of manic-depressive patients, studies have shown that lithium is effective as a preventive medicine for both manic and depressive episodes. Over 200 patients were studied for a period ranging from three months to four years. Of those patients who received lithium during the study period, about 35 percent experienced a relapse. Of those who received a placebo during the same period, about 80 percent experienced a relapse. Although lithium does not help all patients, we can conclude from these results that lithium doubles the chance of improvement for most.

18. If 100 patients with acute depression were given lithium, about how many would respond favorably?
a. 5 to 10
b. 23
c. 35
d. 60 to 80
19. While taking lithium as a preventive treatment for both manic and depressive episodes, what percentage of patients can expect positive results?
a. 35 percent
b. 65 percent
c. 80 percent
d. 90 percent

Hi, I got both of these problems wrong (I got d and b) and I was wondering if someone could explain what the answers are. I'll confirm your answers. Thanks 🙂

I got C and A. Are those right?

and first i got D and B as well, but after looking at it again, they tell you 60-80 percent respond favorably, this is im assuming 100% or 100 people. However, a few sentences later they say, 200 patients were surveyed, thus the percentage should be half 30-40 or 35%. Not sure though.

Actually I got D and B as well. Its a consensus that Kaplan is again wrong. I think I remember this from Kaplan.

But for the first question it specifically asks for acute depression which is stated in the first paragraph that it is 60-80% success rate with lithium.

But for the second question it takes the application for the treatment to both of the manic and depressive episodes and says it has a success rate of 65% because 35% rebound meaning they go back to their disease not according to how Allah is saying.

You are right OP it is D and B.

In the first paragraph , the article was talking about lithium as a treatment for acute depression while in the second one, it was talking about it as a preventive medicine. So, the positive results was 60-80 when the drug was used as a treatment while it was 65 when it was used as a preventive medicine.

As a preventive medicine:
If 200 patient, 35 percent experienced a relapse .So,65 percent can expect positive results which means 130 patients.

if 100 patient, 35 percent experienced a relapse. So,65 percent can expect positive results which means 65 patients.
this is what I understood form this passage !!!!

So the answers should be d & b. Any other suggestions?
