Hello,

I am a community college student, and up to this point I have been able to get by just fine without reading the textbook for my science courses. I have been able to do well by just going to lecture and taking good notes. However, when I transfer, which will be next year to a UC (don't know which one yet), will continuing in this habit of not reading the textbook harm me?

Thanks

No, it won't ;p

Some UC classes will give you a syllabus if any non-lecture reading is required. Most of them will just ask you to remember stuff from the lecture, which by the way is transcribed (for a fee) and usually downloadable (powerpoint from the internet). You just have to study these.

I've never seen the need for an actual book.

Of course, getting into the habit of reading can't hurt you.

I can't speak to the UCs specifically, but I think, more broadly, it depends a lot on the class, so I wouldn't go into next year assuming that textbooks will be redundant or lifesavers.

Essentially, the important thing is to find the study method that works for you--as long as you are getting good grades and getting them honestly, there isn't one 'right' method.

I think you can get by the majority of your classes without opening a text book. I know I don't. You will sometimes get a prof who tests from the book, but he or she will probably tell you this before hand.
