Hey guys, I learned something terrible and I think it may affect my travel plans after October 10 2018.

REAL ID

Basically, some states may require passports in order to travel within the US. I'm from Massachusetts and according to DHS, I may not be able to use my ID after October 10 2018 to fly.

Massachusetts

Getting a passport for domestic travel takes 6-8 weeks. I have interviews in October and I don't think I'll be able to fly.

I'm only posting this to alert and advise anyone if they plan on travelling in the US (depending on your state) you may need a passport.

PA falls into this mess as well.

EDIT: which is stupid because they’re not even issuing REAL IDs in PA until like February or so of next year.

You can get an expedited passport for extra cost in about 2-3 weeks.

Yes, you will.

Having a current passport is rarely a bad idea, so you may take this opportunity to secure one. Then avoid the rush and get a state-issued Real ID before 2020 rolls around. You'll be glad you did.

Starts in 2020

For states that are still on extension, their deadline is Oct. 10 2018. If they are not compliant by then, their residents must have a passport or another form of accepted identification.

2020 is when Real IDs are required for all states.

To be honest, I have a very hard time believing this will be enforced immediately. I think there will be another extension.

If not, then I would think if you have ALL the required items (NOT copies) that are needed for the Real ID with you...

1. passport, certified copy of your birth certificate (NOT a copy!), or green card
2. proof of SS#(such as your SS card, paycheck w/ your SS#, W-2 form)
3. a bill, medical bill, car registration...some official piece of US mail with your full name and your address on it

...then you should be okay to prove who you are and that you are legally here.

Now after 2020 when it is officially supposed to begin, all bets are off if you haven't updated to Real ID.

edit: all this in addition to your DL.

Unless you have another authorized ID, like a passport or a DoD ID.

My state is on the noncompliance list. It has had the deadline pushed back 4-5 times with th latest extension to 10/10/18 fast approaching, as is the January 2019 final deadline. I don’t know if our state will get its feet held to the fire or not but I’m renewing my passport this week as I have travel in late October.

If I had any chances of important interviews coming up, I would get a passport/renewal ASAP and not risk it.

However in some states you can go to licensing and get a compliant “enhanced” drivers license cheaper and quicker than a passport, assuming you don’t need the passport for other reasons. Enhanced requirements are birth certificate or other forms that prove citizenship or permanent residence not just ID.

So which is it? 2018 or 2020?

I headed to the DMV and got my real ID the first week they came out. The clerk asked me why I was rushing since I had until 2020, but I just wanted to get it done.

It's 2018 if your state DOES NOT have an extension and is not compliant

It's 2020 to actually have an ID in hand and need to use it.

In the case above, Massachusetts has adopted REAL ID, and so is compliant. It has until 2020 to get a REAL ID into the hand of every resident who needs one.

It’s an extra 75 bucks to do expedited and overnight processing. What a racket.

Yeah, costs a bit, but the opportunity cost of not being able to fly when you are scheduled to might be more. If you plan ahead, it's no problem. I had to fly to the Baghdad embassy to get an emergency passport when I was deployed. I was happy to pay the extra money at the time as I was desperate (long story, that was pretty much 100% not my fault).

DOD IDs can be used? Nice. Good for future notice(still waiting for clearance)
Now I need to check for MD.
Good thread OP!

I’ve used my DoD ID to fly every time since I’ve been in the military, and on the TSA website it lists DoD and dependent IDs as being acceptable alternatives.
