I've been out of college and into the workforce for a while. I'm 34. I've been married. I'm the classic "career-changer." I wouldn't undertake this illogical, difficult, pretty much insane undertaking unless I was sure. So I got that goin' for me. Which is good.

But I'm not wealthy. I can't ditch it all and go back to school without private loans on top of the federal Stafford loans. And that means I can't get approved unless my credit is perfect, and/or I get a co-signor. Long story short, my ex-Bridezilla messed up the credit pretty well, and only now that I'm running credit reports for myself do I fully understand the FUBAR magnitude of it all.

I'm accepted to an impressive Post-Bac out east for the fall, but if I can't un-FUBAR the credit, or talk a family member into underwriting a big mess o' loans, I can't go in the fall. Impressive school has kindly agreed (in a non-binding sort of a way) to take me next June instead, but who wants to wait?

So, I'm working on it. Worst-case scenario is I quit the day job anyway, work FT rather than PT in health care with the training I've got, and amass that much more experience while I get in shape for next Summer. Everything counts toward the eventual AMCAS application, anyway, so as long as I'm contributing to that, I'm not too depressed about it. (Just really irritated.)

I'm interested to hear other stories, though. Cheer us up. Inspire us. Giving up a perfectly good career and life isn't easy, and when circumstances get in the way it's even worse. What mountains of doo-doo did you climb over to get ready for the Post-Bac experience? What enemies did you crush, what dragons did you slay? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi there. You sound a person who needs a hug. **HUG**

I can empathize with your frustration, but don't let it get you down too much! The credit issue is a real pain, but there are ways to get that cleaned up. I had a similar situation after two wallets were stolen along with a box of checks. You wouldn't believe the mess it created. I don't know what is worse - having $5000 in bad checks written in my name (along with credit card & calling card charges) or fighting with the "establishment" to clear my name.

I found a ton of help at this forum: http://www.debt-consolidation-credit-repair-service.com/phpBB2/ Hopefully, you'll find some great advice (as I did) on how to fight those dragons!

Problem is, it can take time but since you're doing a post-bacc, you have two years to work on it! As for paying for the post-bacc itself, maximize the Stafford and get a job to pay the balance. Don't let people tell you it's too hard to study and work at the same time -- it's just too hard for THEM. I've done graduate school while working and it just meant I had to work harder. People like you & me, we have no choice 🙂
