Hey all. I'd like some input on my current situation with research.
I'm currently doing a research project on how medical students utilize internet social networking sites to get information about residencies. I'm working with an FP attending and a resident, and we plan to publish when we're all done with our survey. It's a trendy, interesting subject and I've been enjoying the project, but since it's not really clinical or basic science research I'm kind of wondering how seriously it's going to be taken by residency directors (especially those on the allo side). Because of this, I've been trying to figure out how I can beef up my research experience.
So...here's my questions:
- If you're trying to shoot for some reasonably competitive spot on the allo side, how much research should you accumulate? As much as possible?
- Should I be aiming to get some mixture of basic and clinical research experience, or is it ok to focus on one side? (I'd imagine the emphasis on research type varies by specialty...)
- There is a persistent rumor among my classmates that it is possible to do 3rd/4th year "research rotations" at major academic medical centers. Has anyone heard of this? It seems fairly farfetched; after all, how much can you really contribute to a research project in 4 weeks?
Thanks in advance...
