Hello,

I don't know if anyone in this forum watches REAL WORLD, but in this new season, there is a girl with an eating disorder. I was surprised the producers put her on this show knowing her problems b/c she is falling apart within the first 2 episodes. Her roommates have no idea how to handle her, and are not equipped to do so anyway. I wonder if she will make it through the season.

I thought reality shows screened out people with psychological/psychiatric problems to decrease their liability.

Any thoughts?

😕

I have always thought that reality shows (particularly The Real World) screened in people with psychological problems. I think the application questionnaire looks like this:

Do you have a real or imagined sense of abandonment? Yes? Welcome to the show!

That was my thought. From what I remember from the show, I don't think there wasn't a person that didn't have at least some raging Axis II problem. If you take 5 well-adjusted, polite, friendly people and put them in a house for a few months...it's not good television. You need the requisite histrionic, narcissist, conduct disordered/antisocial, schizoid, and/or OCD type person.

My feeling is that although real world has made some quesionable moves in the past that have resulted in, in my opinion, great entertainment, this time they have crossed the line. I think the decision to include her on the season is unconcsionable (sp?). Even the argument, "well it will give the disease some much needed exposure" is crap, they could ahve done the true life episode. I think keveryone involved is ill equipped to deal with her issues. I can only see this ending badly for her.

"Real World" is just a poor imitation of "Drawn Together", which dealt with this topic in its first season already...

I thought I was the only one that watched that. It's actually not that good, in my opinion. I much prefer Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. They took a jab at the show the other day. In their intro bumper, they showed a letter from a watcher that said, "Does all American animation have to be FUNNY?"

To which they replied, "Of course not, just look at Drawn Together."

I watched the first season and enjoyed their juxtaposition of the "conventions" of both reality TV and various animation genres.
Problem was, they pretty much "did that" to death in the first 6 episodes, and from then on it was just a matter of "how offensive can we get and still be on before 11pm?" 👎

personally I'm most interested in Brangelina and TomKat - I can't be bothered with the other shows besides 'EXTRA EXTRA'

I agree with sazi, I have caught myself questioning the people on these shows and the motives of the people casting them, then I realized, why the heck would I watch that crap if it weren't for the outragous drama. Not like I watch it every single episode 😳 but I would rather see drama and disfunction on these ridiculas entertaining reality shows, then a bunch of level headed well adjusted adults doing yoga! I have to see how the other side lives ya know 😉 By the way, for anyone that does watch this sinfull delight, do ya really think she has a major eating disorder? She seems a little all around disfunctional to me, yet they usually all are!

Poety, please pinch your cuties cheeks for me 😀

Done pschmom 😉 over ... and over.... and over.... and over... and...

I had to forgo my lurker status and say Drawn Together is so so SO funny. Every episode has me on the floor because it is absolutely funny how racist, sexist, homophobic, etc the characters can be. I find shows like South Park and Drawn Together an appropiate catharsis for the bias (both recognized and unrecognized) that each of us have. And did anyone catch Judge Fudge this season...LOLOLOLOL.."I'm sorry baby, I'm too busy being delicious!"...LOLOL

I personally find Adult Swim to be hit and miss (the Boondocks is sometimes funny, always excessive...I only watch "Futurama" out of respect to Matt Groening and Katy Segal).

I cant believe than girl Paula is still on the REAL WORLD. I guess we will see if SVETLANA has another breakdown.

In the previews for next week, I think paula was crying and saying that "he" put me in the hospital. I didn't catch what came right before that, but I feel like she was talking about someone bothering her to the point that she had to be stabalized in a psychiatric hospital. Anyone else catch that?
