Hey guys - first post on SDN.

High suspicion that I’m getting HP in surgery, not for sure yet but pretty confident it’s not going my way. 3rd year in general hasn’t been great with 2 other HPs.
I have good research (6+ pubs, research lab coordinator) and I’m taking a research year at a great institution - do I need to have a serious reconsideration for what I’m going to do?

depends on step 2, but HP in surgery is not enough to kill your ortho chances. honestly, in ortho, they don't care as much about grades and test scores tbh. aim for step 2 being at least 240s-250s, and i think you'll be good. as long as your grades and scores are "good enough" they'll care more about your aways, letters, research, and connections.

Agreed don’t mess up Step 2 and continue onwards.

What a world we live in where 250s is only "good enough."
lol, the most recently released data shows that the step 2 mean is 249

i suspect that along with signaling, avg step 2 score for competitive specialties will creep up as well as a screening tool, but for now 240s-250s seems like a safe bar to hit
