Hey fellow sdners!
havent been on here in a while, extremely busy with school and apps!
had a question for all of you guys!
First of all, let me start by saying that I was a pre-med before and have taken the MCAT 3 times. Did poor all the time and my score did not improve a bit even after taking kaplan. I was just not doing well on the critical thinking. It was tough!
Therefore, I decided to keep my mind open and shadowed a couple dentists over the past summer break while preparing for the DATs. I really got interested in oral surgery and thus, that is what I want to do. I have an interview at Indiana University on Feb.7th and interview at Boston University on Feb.20th. Now, I have a gut feeling that they are going to ask me why I switched from Pre-med! What would be a good answer in your guys' opinion? Moreover, if any of you have interviewed at these places, I would really appreciate whatever insight or tell me any questions that they asked you!
THANK you guys!🙂

There is an interview feedback are where you can browse people's comments about interviewing at those schools and the questions they were asked. This link is above on the SDN page.

As for how to answer the question of switching from premed to predent...besides the obvious not to tell them you were a premed drop out cause you couldn't cut it...I think you need to figure out for yourself what it is about dentirstry that allures you and go with that. You can't change the past...what happened as a premed has happened...you shouldn't lie about it either, but you just try to down play it by talking about all the great things you personally love and discovered about dentistry.

I wouldn't even bring it up.

I agree. Definitely don't bring it up unless they do - some schools won't even notice, and for other schools it'll be the first thing they ask you about. But make sure you are well prepared to explain the switch to the schools who do bring it up. Also almost every school will ask you some form of "why dentistry over medicine" even if you're not a former premed so be prepared to answer that also.

Why not give them an honest answer?

Why not give them an honest answer?

Yeah, seriously. Why are you asking US why YOU made the switch to dentistry?

But since you asked, just tell them that the MCAT was impossible, and the DAT was a more manageable option. That always works..

Best of luck:luck:

awww no need to be so harsh he's just asking a simple question.....just try out the predent forum...it's quite helpful🙂 don't stress tho...as long as your honest man...you'll be str8....it's not necessarily as tho ur taking the ez route or something....i mean u shadowed a couple dentists...and u gained an interest in oral surgery...so no worries....

sorry, i was being kind of a d!ck. seriously though, this is something you need to come up with an answer to...

aite got it!..i still have about a week to work on my answer to that ..so i m gonna research and come up with the best..thnx guys!!

Well, if I was in your shoes, I would be 100% honest IF the subject came about.

Simply tell them that you have a passion for curing patients and you've always wanted to be in the medical field since you were X-years old and it broke your heart to know that you couldn't make it in because you couldn't cut the grades.... Tell them that instead of bang-flopping and forgetting about the whole idea, you decided to suck it up and move on to another medical field which gives you the same satisfaction.

They'll like this answer because it shows them you never gave up.
