Hey everyone,

I took the PE recently and really messed up on the SOAP note documentation. I skipped around and put in the vitals for the objective section and then completely forgot to go back to fill in the rest of the physical exam. On another patient, I wrote in the HPI/ROS but did not record the rest of the subjective (mhx, shx, meds, etc.). I finished all the rest of the SOAP notes for all other patients.

How screwed do you think I am for the biomedical section? Has anyone heard if certain parts of the SOAP note is weighed more? And is it even true that they drop our lowest patient?

Sincerely,
Panicking med student

I think you'll be fine. If all other ones are complete and you finished the other sections, you really should be fine. I forgot to finish the rest of the subjective (just did HPI/ROS) in one and didn't complete the objective in another, and I passed.

Thanks man, that makes me feel a little better. One question- when you said you didn't complete the objective, did you just not do it at all or it was partially finished?

I think I had vitals and maybe 1 system down when time ran out. Really don't worry about it. Everyone feels like they failed it, and all you think about are the little mistakes. You most likely passed.

If you didn't feel demoralized you did something wrong. That test makes everyone a nervous wreck. If you washed your hands, were polite and did some OMM you already have a great chance of passing. Don't sweat it.

I know someone who completely left out an A/P on a patient and still passed. Who knows what other mistakes they made. As long as you were polite and professional to the patient, rest easy. There's nothing else you can do at this point anyway until the results come out.

If you only left it out of the one note, don't sweat it.

One or two big mistakes is fine. or several tiny ones. theyre mostly interested in big picture, overall type stuff.

on mine, one of the actors got on my nerves so I punched him through the one way mirror in the back then flipped off the cameras. The rest of the encounters went smoothly though. Still passed.

Disagree. I think they're mostly interested in making money.

You're likely fine. Someone in my class left the assessment and plan completely blank on more than 1 patient, and passed the PE. Try not the stress too much.

If you're applying through the NRMP (MD) match, DO NOT RELEASE YOUR COMLEX SCORES. I actually didn't pass my PE either, but I knew MD programs don't give a **** about your COMLEX scores since they cannot use them to directly compare to your MD competition nor can they calculate what is good vs not good. There are other instances on the EM ROL thread that had DO students who had better apps than I did, but they released their COMLEX showing that they failed the PE and they received 1/3 the number of interviews that I did, and I believe they didn't match (don't know if it was because they knew they failed the PE).

So do not release your COMLEX this cycle... but you have no choice if you're doing the DO match. However, I know plenty of my friends that also failed it and matched into competitive DO programs. And actually, the PDs would laugh that they failed and they would bond over that during interview days because we all know PE is straight bull**** and they give you zero feedback as to what happened and you're simply supposed to just take it and pay them $1300 again.
