Hello everyone,

.I am so excited that I was accepted by both NYU and Buffalo, but I don’t know which one I should go to. Can anyone give me some suggestions about these schools in terms of their education, clinical experience, job opportunities after graduation, environment…? Buffalo is great but it’s very far away from my home in the city. NYU is close but it’s expensive and not as good as Buffalo I heard. What do you think? My deposit deadlines are next week. I really need your help. Thank you so much. .

Buffalo. It's not worth it to go to NYU if you get into a NY state school. Fly JetBlue home on the weekends if you miss your family so much, $49 each way. Plenty of students at Buffalo are from NYC/LI who found it easier to study at Buffalo because there are less distractions there so you really have to concentrate on dental school.

Job opportunities are the same if you graduate from either school since you have to do a residency to practice in NY. I did my residency with several NYU grads. I was better prepared when we entered, but when we finished, we were all looking for the same jobs in the city since most people have to start at the bottom and work your way up to better opportunties (unless you have a relative or someone who can hook you up).

Buffalo, if not only for the price. I think you'll get a fine education at either school but the $200k less in debt you'll be after graduating from UB is ironically priceless.

jb!🙂

Thank you. The tuition in NYU is twice as much as expensive than in Buffalo. The living cost in the city is ....😳

Buffalo is significantly cheaper. You could find a decent place at $500-$1000 per month in Buffalo. I hate to imagine how much rent is going to be in NYC even if its far away.

Buffalo is superior clinically, the classes are smaller, and it is just a very laid back place.

Ok, maybe I should choose UB.

easy decision.. Buffalo. I did my undergad there and my dental at NYU. Buffalo is a great place to be (if you love snow!!), and you will get a better education at a 1/3 of the cost of NYU. Plus, you can eat the best wings in the world at Duffs.

what if I don't like snow and I will miss my family in the city since I am the only child. My parents really depend on me. Any suggestion for living close to the south campus if I don't have a car?

Snow is a serious issue if you have a car. It's a royal pain in the neck trying to dig the car out and drive it in the snow. I am planning on not taking a car to Buffalo.

It is technically possible to get by without a car if you live within walking distance to the south campus. But you might end up feeling "trapped" without a car and have to depend on your classmates to go anywhere besides the south campus (airport, mall, downtown school events, restaurants with your friends, other people's apartments to study and hangout, etc). I would highly recommend anyone who moves to Buffalo to at least keep a car, even if it just for weekend use, because the city and its suburbs are not very easily commutable without one. Yes you do have to clean the snow off it in the winter prior to driving it, but it's just a part of life there. The roads are generally clean, but just get a good set of snow tires on any car you take up there and you will be fine.

I don't know. I've been told that it just not worth it.

I wouldn't want to be here without a car, it would suck but would be doable. As for the price difference I couldn't imagine spending another 200k for my education. As for cost of living, we own our house about 2 miles from campus in a nice little neighborhood and our total payment is only about 600 including taxes and insurance. I would really recommend Buffalo even if you are further from home. Remember for that extra 200k you could fly home every weekend and still come out ahead by $182,000.

You can always live around the school. There are quite some apartments within walking distance.

NYU is a good school, but:

Go to Buffalo unless you're not paying for NYU (if you're on military scholarship for example).

You'll be happy that you did when you graduate with 1/3 the debt-load.

What resources do you suggest to use in searching for apartments? I am looking through Craig's list.

Yeah, I have to agree with the other posters. While it may be tough to be away from family, the financial difference is just so huge that Buffalo is truly the right choice.

I love NYU, but it does cost a lot. I don't agree with other posters that Buff is automatically a better school though -- as far as cool cases go, if you don't see it in New York then it doesn't exist. But even if NYU were decidedly "better", I would go with the cheaper school.

Congrats on having to make a choice!

Thanks so much all of you. I am thinking UB more than NYU now.

By the way, how can I find apartments near the south campus? Where do I go for grocery shopping?

Maybe you spoke to the 1 student who doesn't have a car and always manages to bum a ride off others. If you don't have a car, then you will be that guy. In our class of 90, only 1 student didn't have a car. That should be a big sign right there that a car should basically be on the supplies list for school. Lucky for the guy without a car, he had a good friend in our class that used to drop him off during those really cold nights. At least 5 people lived within walking distance, but even they would drive to the school when it was too cold.

I can't believe that you even have to give it a second thought!?! Having that kind of monster debt when you could cut it by 2/3's is a no brainer. The extra 200K will haunt you EVERY time you make a purchase from the day you graduate dental school til the day it's paid off... which will probably be the day before you retire! All this crap about what do you like or feel is from people that don't understand the first thing about a hard earned dollar. Then there's the discussion about getting a car... Well, think about what kind of car you can get for the savings of 200K!?!

Seriously, do yourself a favor and go to the cheapest school, period. Any good dentist will tell you that they didn't get to that level because of the school they went to. It all has to do with what you do with that degree, regardless of where it's from because god knows your patients won't give a crap, once you're out practicing. 200K can buy a hell of a lot of great CE and you'll learn more there than you ever would from the best dental school. This advice is priceless... I've seen too many fellow young dentists getting tied down and unable to make career moves because they wanted the Ivy league school. If you have someone footing the bill go where you feel all warm and fuzzy but if not, go to the cheapest school.

You know, they should ban private schools in NYC and LA. Make it a state school only zone.

Okay I'll try to take a car. How cold does it get in Buffalo?

Weather.com says it's 23 today but feels like 13. The windchill factor is what makes it feel colder than the actual temperature and makes it difficult to walk long distances with that cold wind blowing and howling at you. Maybe you won't need a car, like I said, there are always a few who manage to get by with out one. You can always start school and then buy one if you think you need it. That's what the students from California ended up doing.

Does it get very windy? I am told that it is windier than Boston.

This winter has been quite windy, they are not always. It can get very cold, this past week has been exceptionally cold. Probably -15 with windchill. This is not the norm though. There are generally a few pockets of horrible weather and the rest is schizophrenic. You never really know what you will be getting here, but you can rest assured that there will be some snow, ice, sleet, wind and very cold temps. On occasion, we get a 60 or 70 degree day mixed in there somewhere. It seems worse than it is though and that you will just have to trust me on.

Buffalo, no doubt.

Buffalo is not as cold as most people think, it just snows alot.

Okay, I got the email concerning the orientation site.

Got the email as well. I would really like to hear about living expenses these guys are paying that live in a house.

It seems like lodging is going to be relatively inexpensive unless you are going for a really nice neighborhood. I checked in Craig's list and some of them are listed around $500-$1000 but they are all over.

well it can't hurt just to have your car there, unless of course you only have one car and someone back home needs it.. then its a different story. I plan on bringing my car up, if the snow really does get that bad then no prob just leave the car in the driveway/garage/street. Doesn't hurt if you have an all wheel drive car.. i have a fwd.. freakin nissans 😡
