hiiii all ,
culd sumone having good knowledge on the discussion over there plz help me out from this big confusion ....
like im done wid my MD degree and now i wanted to do my residency at US , bt instead of spending nearly one yr at USMLE coaching, i jus wanted to go to US on some one year based programs which will be paid after graduating , few of my senior consultants advised me to go to US on MPH program and jus get into my journey of residency besides MPH ... But my question is tat , is it possible to go for an MPH program at US and get on with my USMLE studying at home simultaneously? what is the duration of MPH in US after completion of MD?? does this MPH help me out in some or the other way in future becos i dnt hav ny intentions in settling in this field , i wanted to do my residency , can some one plz help me out in giving me the good universities out there for MPH program at US with any financial aid like educational loans or scholarships ?? can i hav any part time jobs there apart from my studies??
Adivces on If there are any other one year based programs better than MPH are very well appreciated........
waiting for ur valuable reply .
Thank you..

Wow.

Why do you want an MPH? It is going to cost either money or, if you're lucky, you will still have to pay for it by being a research or teaching assistant. The MPH will not help you very much in preparing to take and pass the USMLE, which is a requirement for entry into a US residency and to get a medical license in any state.

But to answer your question, yes, there are 1-year MPH programs as well as online programs. It is possible to work and take an online or part-time MPH simultaneously. I do not know what their policies are on international students.

I'm working on an MPH right now and there are a few foreign grad MD's doing an MPH and it seems like they want to do a U.S. residency afterwards. I'm not sure if these physicians have done a residency in their home country already or not.

I'm not sure what advantage having an MPH gives you when applying to US residency programs. By itself, I don't know that it will help you much, it will get you into the US and put you in a position to potentially make connections with other physicians, maybe your project advisor, that could help you prepare yourself to get into a U.S. residency maybe. MPH programs vary in length and can be done in 1 yr for someone with an MD degree. They can also be stretched out over a longer spam of time to allow the student to work part time as well attend school part time. It will be possible to study for the USMLE while working on an MPH in most cases.

There's an entire forum for ppl interested in MPHs here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=94

and an entire thread on international students applying for MPHs here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=790022

I'd suggest checking those out and doing some searches in that forum. That would probably be your best place to find that info around here.

Lastly, and I hate to comment on language issues, but a lot of graduate programs will require non-native english speaking students to take and pass the TOEFL which is Test of English as Foreign Langue which tests your ability to use and understand english in an academic setting at an solid level. You'll need to be prepared for that because your original post was a bit difficult to follow.

thank you for ur valuable advices wholeheartedly and GUH..

I don't think you can really do an MPH while studying for your USMLE. It will be difficult work studying for your USMLE and i would recommend taking time off to dedicate yourself to study. Maybe an MPH will help with application to residency but if u can't explain why you want one it is pretty useless.

Consider the MBA in health administration at Uni Colorado - Denver. The program has some of the world's best faculty and is packaged in an executive format. There have been many international students. You can check out their program at their website. Your financial assistance questions might be answered there, too. Good luck.
