i graduated from a big public univ in december 2009 with BS in chemistry (Biochemistry).
i applied last summer in early July to 13 schools (all private) but no interview. It was kinda expected b/o my 2.9 science GPA and 3.0 overall GPA. i took DAT twice already and second time (took last August) i got 19/19/21 (TS, AA, PAT)
Since december, i have been studying for DAT to get 20+. im thinking about reapplying this summer with my new DAT and doing 1 year masters program. but am really worried and not confident about doing better on my third DAT. im confident that i will do well in master's program but i wont have my new GPA if i apply this june.

i dont like having a gap year if i apply after my master's but i am worried about not getting a single interview again.

what should i do? 🙁

Wow, you and I have similar stats! Just go with your gut on this...I think your DAT is above the national average. Your GPA is arguable. What have you done to improve your app? (volunteer, post-bac) I'm applying as well, but I will be enrolling into a Master's program to make me more competitive. Even if I don't get in next year, I'm going to kep the ball rolling. Keep fighting!

your problem is more your GPA than your DAT score. It's not your dat score that is holding you back from interviews and ultimately acceptance into D-school. With that GPA, you will have to do phenomenal on your last DAT to get interviews. Unless you're really confident you can manage 22-23+ across the board, I'd suggest to save yourself the effort and do a masters program and improve that GPA.

p.s. Your stats are about where mine used to be a year ago and when I went to dean of admissions at UMDNJ to ask for advice, what I told you above is what he told me. Hope that helps. Good luck!

thanks for the advice. i know i should def need to improve my gpa in the masters program.
would be okay to reapply this summer without new gpa though?

If you are URM you will get in. Otherwise yea do like SMP or reg masters. Most schools have lots of non thesis masters if your school does just do it. I am so interested in my schools non thesis master programs I kinda just want to do one even if I can get into dental school the first time I apply. You get to take all the super cool classes with no verbal exam at the end of the masters how freaking cool.
