Hello, I was wondering how hard it is to reapply to medical school as I have just been dimissed from my school (appeal in process)? Will alot of school hold this against me? I did well on the MCAT, but that was a while ago.

Hi,
I have a low GPA around 2.98, did my undergrad double major in biophysics and biochemistry but had a really high MCAT (it's expired now because I took it back in 2001) so a US medical school took a chance and admitted me. However, I ended up getting kicked out because I failed a class twice. Could I apply to caribbean medical schools, and which ones could I reasonably get into? I'm taking the MCAT in april. Or what about post-baccalaureate premed programs in the US that lead to us med school admission (sorta like the MS/MD ones) or would they look at me being kicked out as a black mark? Thanks guys and gals.

I'm so sorry to read your post. I can only give you an andecdotal reply so it might not be that helpful. A senior member of the admissions committee whom I am friendly with (at an allopathic school) just told me a story. He interviewed an applicant this year who had been dismissed from another school in our state. He said that the applicant would not give him a straight answer as to why he was dismissed and this is what ultimately lead to his current application being rejected. He said that, had the student been open, it might have helped his case. AMCAS and/or the secondary application has a space for you to declare such information, and he obviously got at least one interview with this. Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

Thank you, Scottish Chap. That post gave me some hope because I'm an honest person. In my case I started med school when I was too young (age 20) just did not know how to study, had trouble focusing, and didn't know how to organize my time. Do you think if I reapplied and explained all of this, that I might have a chance at med school again?

Honestly, I have no idea of how successful you'd be.....I only had one example to share with you. I have seen a few people post on SDN who claimed that they were dismissed from U.S. schools before finding success via the Caribbean, but it is, of course, difficult to gauge authenticity on an anonymous forum like SDN. I wish you the very best of luck!

I don't know what your chances are either but your reason for being dismissed is understandable. I'm sure if you could prove to them that you have matured since then you would have a chance.

Thanks for the support guys. I also had health problems that were well documented. The medical school I went to (where I was terribly unhappy, not the school but just the mean miserable people there) said that if I improved my record, possibly with a one-year master's degree, that they would likely let me back in since my mcat was good (but expired)...but hopefully I'll get into an MS/MD at another school with a good explanation. otherwise if american schools are out of the question for me i'd love to attend st. george's or SABA in the caribbean. good schools, good rep, and the students are all very well prepared.

God bless you friend, I feel for you. I actually lost contact with a friend who was going through the same thing. If it means anything, we had 3 students start out at St. George's and wound up transferring into our class. It's safe to say they were all in the top 5%. Don't give up hope. Take care.

Thanks so much 🙂 Hopefully I'll get in an MS/MD somewhere. But I need to MURDER my april mcat first. Ahh! 😱 I don't remember all that orgo and phys I took 5 years ago

Why can't you do a MS at your MD school?
