I will be applying for the 2006/2007 application cycle and I just wanted to get some opinions from you all.

I applied originally with a 2.98cum/2.6sci 18/19/17 DAT, I'm an MD resident. I got an interview at UMmaryland but no acceptance.

Since then I graduated with a 3.05 cum/2.8ish sci gpa, started a masters at Johns Hopkins (part-time) with a 3.85 gpa (cum and sci) and work part-time doing research at Hopkins. Obviously I need to retake the DAT, and score above 20's.

Since I didn't do so well last time I applied, I am a little scared this time. Anyone have better luck their second time around? I guess getting rejected first time kinda makes me a little scared this time.

Any advice? help? Thank you so much!

the fact that your grades have improved significantly can perhaps show the dental schools that you are a committed student, and is willing to work hard to get into a dental school. If you score over 20 on the DAT's, you should be in good shape.

Give the dean of admissions over at Maryland a call and see if he needs someone to cut his grass for him. Also, I would look into the possibility of finding some Native American relatives. Other than that, looks like you've got the right idea on how to improve your chances and have been workin hard. Good luck with your application next year.

Thanks for the replies.

Anyone out there reapplied? How was your experience different? Did the adcoms look down on you or think you are dedicated for reapplying?

It took me 2 tries to get in...the only thing I did was retake my dat. I went from a 19/17/18 to a 21/20/18. My gpa was a 3.1ish overall with a 2.9 science. Looks like you should be fine with an improvement in the DAT, good luck.

I applied last year and this year. I was not looked down on. I applied very late last year and that was a big reason I was only wait-listed. I did not change anything, just applied earlier.

i applied last year with a 17/18/19. i ended up getting in at NYU off of the waiting list after i had already filled out my ap for the this year. so i deferred. but i retook my dat and got 18/19/22 and pulled 3.8 and 4.0 in my last semesters at college. this year i have been interviewed at unlv, usc, and ucsf. i have already been accepted to usc, and nyu from last year, and am hoping to receive acceptances from the other schools i interviewed at ::crossing fingers::...

in all my interviews they have been very impressed that i reapplied. it shows that you really want it. if you raise your dat you will have no problem getting in next year. good luck

p.s. i love the find a native american family member comment hahahah! 😀

I'm in the same boat. I'll have to reapply. My DATs are good 22/22/21 AA/TS/PAT with 3.2 gpa, late applicant=doomed. Also I only applied to UNC and Nova. UNC is in state, got an interview, but the quality of applicants was tremendous. I'll get more shadowing and volunteering hours, be more prepared, and apply to a few more schools. Hopefully I'll find a home.

I was accepted at UNC this year (my 2nd time applying) with 3.0ish CUM/3.0ish SCI. In between the application cycles, I upped my DAT from 19/18/17 to 20/19/19, took and aced a micrbiology class, and did some hardcore volunteering at a student run dental clinic. In the interviews this year, the majority of questions revolved around how I'd improved my application between cycles. Keep your interviews focused on the positives that you've taken from this experience and you should be good to go. BTW, not once did I get negative feedback about being a 2nd time applicant. In fact, one of the students at the UNC interview mentioned that over 1/3 of the current dental students had applied more than once...

at MCG here in georgia last year they accepted like 27 or 28 people who were 2nd year applicants and i think this year that number was even higher. in all they only accept about 60 people. i'd suggest calling some of the schools in the next few weeks and either asking them to give you a few ideas of what to do to improve your appl. or maybe go visit them and sit down with someone and go over your appl. just a thought.

question-did you get rejected or waitlisted for MD? if it was for this cycle and only waitlisted, i would actually write them a letter and just give them an update on where you stand. MD seems to love everything in writing. i figure its worth a shot!

Guys, I have a quick question regarding the reapplication.
So if you were to re-apply for the same schools for 2007 cycle, do you have to start you application all over again? I mean, do you have to submit your LOR/parent info/biographic info/essay, etc. to AADSAS fresh?

Yep, you have to completely fill out a new application for the AADSAS as well as each schools secondary. Do yourself a favor and copy/write the info out of this year's application before it closes. Then you won't have to spend time hunting for that information again.
