  1. Pharmacy Student
I applied to UF last year and got rejected. Since then I've finished my bachelors and got a job as a compounding technician in a pharmacy. I plan to reapply to UF again this year, and I had some questions.

Last year you needed 2 letters of rec to apply to UF. I was wondering if you needed to submit new ones for reapplying, or if you could use your old ones, or one of your old ones. But then I was looking at the UF website and I didnt see anything about letters of rec. Did they do away with this requirement??

I graduated from UF cum laude with a bachelors in animal science. I had an overall GPA of 3.41 and a Science GPA of 3.14. I got a 94% on my PCAT, which I might retake to try to get it higher. I have a lot of volunteer experience in other areas (not pharmacy). I'm now working as a compounding technician. What do you think my chances are of getting in the second time around?

Did you ask the school why they rejected you last year?

Also, your pcat is awesome. Do you want to retake it to "up" a particular section?

My roomate is currently attending the Apopka campus since he did not get into the main one. He was also a UF graduate. He has a long family line of Pharmacists. He also had a GPA Accum of 3.67 and Science GPA of 3.88 and got a 97% on his PCAT. He was waitlisted at UF, and finally got in 3 weeks before the start of the fall semester ( this was last year). Thought i'd let you keep that in mind. Not trying to be mean, but it sounds like you have too low of scores for a school like UF. But nothing wrong with trying. Good luck!

PS. I would also like to add that he had Pharmacy tech Experience by working at Publix for 6 months.

My reccomendation to you would to do a year of Post-back in the sciences. Your PCAT is fine. Or graduate school is always an option if you have your heart set on UF.

Thank you for the reality check. Too bad I didn't try this a few years ago. Talking to people from work (recently graduated pharmacists from UF and current pharmacy students) told me it was a hell of a lot easier getting into UF a few years ago.

When did your roommate apply? I get the feeling that the earlier you apply, the better your chances are. Also, I *want* the Apopka location. Do you think choosing that as my first choice will make a difference?

There were less applicants before PharmCAS, so in that sense it was easier. I had a 3.9 math science GPA and a 98 PCAT. Many of my classmates had 99 PCAT scores. Even though we only had around 1,000 applicants instead of 2,500, I don't think it was a whole lot easier to get in. You still needed the good grades & PCAT.

The campus ranking form has no bearing on whether you get in or not. There are just as many students who wish to stay in their home towns as those who want to live in Gainesville. Most G'ville students watch their lectures online, too. There's no advantage to being in Gainesville.

Besides being there for all the home football games in the swamp.. which are absolutely amazing. Living in a college town with people your own age. Being able to meet with your professors and let them get to know you. Having study groups in the Campus library. Things of that nature. 😉

PS> I forgot to mention Pita Pit too which make healthy meals for that all night study session, plus they are only in college towns... haha

This isn't necessariy true. I had a 3.68 overall GPA with a Bachelors in Biomedical Sciences from USF and a Science GPA around 3.6. I only got an 82 on the PCAT (taken once) and was accepted one week after I submitted my application (submitted in late january). I also only had minimal hospital and retail experience.

I think they look a little more heavily on someone with a Bachelor's already (at least that's what one of the professors told me who is on the admission's committee). I think it just depends on the individual and their personal statement and such. It also depends on when you apply! The earlier the better. When I was accepted they still had 90 spots in gainesville out of 130. But i'm also at Apopka and love it!

We get football tickets at the other campuses, too. There is a pharmacy block of seats in the Swamp. Most of the single students on our campus live with each other and hang out together. We have a huge library with study areas and yes, we have study groups. I've met most of my professors because they come to the other campuses. For a lab class last year, the same professor drove down every week and led the class for us. By year two, many students in Gainesville stop coming to lectures because they prefer the online format. During lectures, the professors joke about Gainesville being the newest distance campus.

We don't have a Pita Pit.
