Hello,

I am thinking of reapplying for this cycle, and wondering if it's okay to apply for med schools while I am doing my masters program. I just started my masters (well, it was my backup plan when I applied last cycle), and realized that it will take me about three years to finish the program. So, there are a couple of questions I would like to ask:

1) Would med schools scruntinize the fact that I am reapplying while I am pursuing a graduate degree?
2) Should I mention in AMCAS that I am doing a masters program when I haven't really settled in a permanent lab at this point and am not taking any course as of now?

I look forward to hear some advices soon. Thank you 🙂

Depending on the school, they may or may not care. I've heard of people quitting PhD programs and going to medschool from there. I'm in a 1 yr master's so no conflicts here; however, some schools DO require an official letter from your dean stating that your graduate dept is aware of your application to medical school for next fall.

Good luck!!

Some schools specifically ask on their secondaries if you are in the midst of completing a graduate degree. I think most don't, though.

Be prepared to answer questions about your current activities when you go to interviews, though...I imagine that a masters is a full-time occupation, and the interviewers might not take it well if they find out that you're planning to drop out of the program if you get into med school.

Some schools will require that you complete the program that you are currently in to enter medical school, or at least acquire a letter from the dean granting your release from the program on "good terms". You need to call each school to find out their individual policy.
