question: if someone needs to leave med school for personal reasons that necessitates a move (but doesnt get a transfer) are they pretty much DONE with medicine or would they be eligible to reapply to other med schools (as a first year applicant)? Is it too much to over come in the application for another school to take a chance or does it just need to be properly explained. what do you guys think? examples?

I think it would depend on the reasons for moving. Just like when considering a transfer, moving for a sick family member or because of a spouse's work are widely accepted reasons.

so there's no rule that you know of that says once you matriculate in a school you cannot re-enter the application cycle.

I left after one semester for a fiance's job. By the grace of God I got in a new school off the waitlist. But the school that I ended up at stated on their website that it was unlikely to accept students who previously attended medical school and left for any reason. However, they did accept me and I can no longer find that statement, they must have changed their policy or moved the web page. Good luck with your decision, but know that it is possible. Keep in mind that no matter what year your in you are putting yourself atleast two years behind because the 2012 cycle is essentially over so you will have to wait until the class of 20013.

I recommend talking with someone in your administration, the dean of student affairs, many schools want to see you graduate. So if you have a desire to become a doctor they may work with you as far as a leave of absence. If possible finish out the semester and try to transfer, you just never know.

Oh come on. There are people who failed out of medical school numerous times and are now practicing M.D.'s. No worries, just makes the path a bit harder. You might have to end up taking the foreign school route...but you still have plenty of options.
