I just received an offer as a staff pharmacist from Vons(Safeway) in Southern California. Does any one have any experience working for this company? Any experiences would be appreciated!

Vons is fine especially in this economy. Do you know where they will station you?

I worked for Vons as a tech before starting pharmacy school. I really liked it, but of course a lot depends on what store you'll be working at, who your district manager is, etc. They try to do a lot with screenings and immunizations, so there are a lot of opportunities to promote health in your community. Their computer systems kind of sucks (at least now that I've seen what other systems are like!), but I hear they might be changing over sometime soon anyway? I might be wrong.

Overall I had a great experience, and the staff pharmacist I worked with back then is still there and really likes it. They've been cutting tech hours recently b/c of the economy, but I think that's probably pretty standard right now in any company. Good luck deciding! 🙂

Safeway, Kroger, Sav-on, etc all pretty much seem the same to me. Safeway usually closes around 7pm which is nice. I would just look at the location you would be working at itself and base your decision off of that. Go shadow a pharmacist at the location for a day and talk to the staff and see if it the place for you.

You are just biding time until you find the right opportunity to open/buy your own pharmacy right?

I've heard mostly good things about Vons, I'd go for it 👍

i worked for safeway as a b-tech. they're really into customer service to the point that its annoying. Other than that, I really like the grocery store environment, it's much more spacious and interesting than being crammed into the back of a tiny drugstore.

Doesn't Vons use PDX? I love PDX (we use that over here at Publix, and ironically switching to a newer system in a few months). The customer service aspect makes it less like WalMart and Walgreens and will probably be a lot nicer to work for too.

Just because the company stresses customer service does not mean it is going to make the customers behave any better. More likely than not, management will bend over backwards to make the customer happy even when they are belligerent, rude and flat out wrong.

Yes, Vons uses PDX. I like windows based systems but PDX is not too bad.

I worked for Safeway...management isn't always the greatest, but it wasn't too bad. If I were to work for retail, that is where I would go. The hours are good, but you may not always have enough tech help.
