I believe it's a box you check when signing up for the MCAT - "yes, feel free to send my information to schools" or something like that.

MD/PhD is actually sometimes less competitive (at least by GPA/MCAT).

It takes a lot more time with minimal benefits to your future career.

Yup, happened to me too when I got mail from Wash U. I did a search and found out that it was really common. My friend also got one from Alabama recently.
