Hi Guys,

For those of you who have taken the exam in the past 6 months... were there any Alkene, Alkyne, and Benzene reactions in the Ochem section?

I know that AAMC topics list doesn't include them. But I'm a bit skeptical that they won't show up in some form. However, I don't want to jam extra info in my head if I don't need to.

Thanks in advance.

There was very little Organic on my test. The only reaction I specifically remember was an aldehyde reaction. Other than that, the organic on there was like stereochem and resonance like things. But there were no real hard, obscure reactions, I do remember that.

Organic chem is my best class out of all the prereqs...go figure that there's less and less every year. Why can't they do that with the verbal instead?

the EK book claims that the AAMC won't be testing benzene anymore... don't know if that helps.

just remember the basics about pi bonds and you should be OK for alkenes/-ynes. More reactive, undergo hydrogenation, bromination without UV/heat, etc.

EK claims it because (as the op stated) aromaticity and benzene, alkenes, and alkynes are no longer on the AAMC's published list of topics for organic chemistry. That being said though, I have still come across threads with people saying that it was helpful to know the general behaviors of these groups. Can't say for myself yet...

i've been wondering this as well. on some of the practice tests i've been surprised by the level of complexity of some of the orgo passages. another thing i've been concerned with is nomenclature... i know my basic nomenclature as well as anyone, but sometimes i'll get sniped by a question with some semi-obscure named compound (without a structure) and i won't know what it is. for those who have taken the test, has this been an issue for you?
