Hi all,

I received my license this month and have been asked to supervise a practicum student/extern on her last experience before she applies for internship. My understanding is that the "must be licensed for 2 years" only applies to supervising postdocs; however, I wanted to double-check here first in case someone has the answer before I muster up the strength to call the board. *inb4 someone says contact the board* Yes, I know I should contact the board directly first, but as anyone who has previously contacted the board may know, they are not known for being warm and/or helpful.

Thanks!

From my understanding (I am also licensed in NJ) is that you cannot supervise any doctoral level student unless you have been licensed in NJ for two years. I could be wrong though.

What the hell is supposed to happen in the 2 years after licensure that hasn't happened already? Those 2 years of CEUs supposed to make you even better? I would love to know if anyone has an answer as to why this is.

Just another hoop to jump through 🙁 NI does not make the licensing process easy in the first place and this is an added frustration once licensed.

FYI- I called the board and the person I spoke with informed me that the req. to be licensed for 2 years only applies to supervising interns and postdocs, and that they "aren't interested" in that for externs/practicum students, whatever that means!

HA. I am now even more curious about that.

There are a decent # of states that do the 2 year rule for supervision only for hours that count towards licensure (internship depending on the state, and postdoc). Not sure about their justification for the rule, but it is what it is.
