Hey guyz

I had already introduced myself a week ago whwen I posted another thread.-Indian dentist in Manhattan, Taking NBDE A in Aug(computerised).

All you pple out there who are going to take their NBDE A on july 17th and before-work hard, good luck, cross your fingers.I am taking mine on August 12th(hopefully!-not registered yet).

I am posting this new thread on recommendation letters because I din't find a similar one in the forum. Anyways, I hope I can get some of you to help me out with my query.
My Queries are:

1)Few of the universities require 3 letters of recommendation from the graduated school. Does this mean that if I am applying to 5 schools for an advanced standing I will need 15 separate letters ?

2)should they be Individually addressed to the schools?

3) Spare me if this is a stupid question-Are notarised copies of the letters sufficient insted of 15 separate ones? 🙂

Hoping to get a response. By the way, anyone in Manhattan looking forward to do a combined study?- do let me know
Bye
more later.

Hello and welcome to the forums (your new homepage) dew ...
Well, I would say:

1] Yes. If each of the 5 schools require 3 letters, then yes. Normally I think schools require only 2.

2] Not necessarily. You can just address it to "to whom it may concern" or "Dear admission committee" ... you know, something generic like that. Although I have to say that it looks MUCH better if they are specifically adressed to a certain school. It just shows that you are interested enough to do that. But to answer your question, not necessarily.

3] You would have to check with every school on that one, unless they specify something on their website or pre-requisite checklist.
For me, some schools said notarized copies of recc. letters were fine (specially overseas letters) while others insisted that they be sealed in the original envelope.

Generally as you probably have noticed already it is better to get atleast 5 letters of recommendation/reference from each of your references. You are going to ask them anyways, so just politely ask if they can make you 5 or 7 duplicate copies for the purpose of applying to multiple schools/programs.

Good Luck.

hi nile this is great piece of information .i had 1 ques ,when we are sending reco letter to each school it should be photocopy of the original one or original itself , i am little confuse can u explain the last point .

Hello!
I have a question.
Many schools ask for a letter of recommendation from the dean. I graduated 12 years ago and I can't find him. May I send a letter from a professor instead? Thanks!

Absolutely not 😱

You have to track the dean down and get the letter from him/her personally, unless he/she is dead, then you're gonna have to do some digging 😀

That was awful Tawfiq ! 😡

You'll be fine Sarina with a replacement letter as long as you explain this to the admission people well in advance, or you can always ask the current dean to give you a letter.

Hi Kitty.
As to the best of my knowledge, it has to be an original letter. In most cases, schools even require that the letter be in a "sealed" envelope, and obviously, bear the original LOR (letter of recommendation).
In reality, you should not have access to read your own recommendation letter. It is usually sent directly from who ever wrote the letter on your behalf to the admission committee directly.
However, since our whole application process (international graduates) is one out of the norm, exceptions are common.
In my case, some schools agreed to accept a "loose" recommendation letter (not sealed in an envelope) as long as they believed that it was authentic. Other schools actually allowed me to send a photocopy of my recommendation letter, as long as I included the necessary contact information for that reference in case they needed to verify with him/her the letters authenticity.
In the case that they accept a photocopy of your original letter, usually they will ask for the photocopy to be notarized. You can get notarized copies of original documents at pretty much any bank (you need to have an account with them first). All you would need is;
1. Original letter of recommendation
2. Verification of existence of bank account
3. 2 forms of ID (preferably photo ID)
... and that's about it. At my bank they did it free of charge too.
Some other stationary and shipping stores may provide that service for a certain fee, ie; FedEx Kinko’s, UPS store, Target Copy and sometimes even Wal-Mart will have a notary public on duty.
I hope it's not too long of an answer to too simple of a question. I just try to be thorough when possible on issues seldom covered on SDN. Hope it helps.
Good Luck.

Hi,

What is the format required for the reco letters? Are 2-3 lines sufficient or do they need a long letter?

Thanks

Hi Nile,

I have another question regarding the recommendation letters.
Would it be okay to for someone to write a recommendation letter and send it directly to the college instead of sending them along with my application.

would that be a problem? I mean would it confuse them or something.

Thanx again Nile. We always look forward to ur reply.

All the best

Is there certain requirements for reco when applying to a dental school? Everyone keep asking the format or the requirements asked? Can anyone give an info about this?

Thanks

That's gonna be determined by each school according to their guidelines, so you need to get that info from the school....
