I'm wondering what DO schools you would recommend out of State. I've been looking at UNT-Health Science because it is less expensive and I have cousins in Texas. However, my concern is they will want some connection to the state and being from Wisconsin I don't wanna apply and not get in because I have no connection.

Right now I'm undecided on HCOM and Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine. I'm just looking for about 7 schools and have about 4-5 right now. I'm just looking for other recommendations. I think there's a school in Arizona that was recommended.

I'm looking for the following:
-less expensive compared to others
-able to get in-state tuition at a year (OOS can't be terribly expensive)
-accept a decent amount of OOS (won't get denied for not having a specific reason applying to that state, but I'm not sure if most require this)
-less expensive cost of living
-live-streaming/lectures able to watch on computers
-decent reputation
-decent amount of scholarships if applicable (not sure how much DO schools give out scholarships)

I'm just looking for feedback because if a school doesn't have favorable reviews I would rather not attend

There isn’t a single DO school that fits your criteria. You can have a few of those, but definitely not all, in fact not even a majority.

I don't know about all schools but many wont let you get in state tuition (if they even have any, because most DO schools are private) because technically you are a student. It was the same reason many states dont allow undergraduates to get in state status unless they work there and can prove they have for a year or so. So honestly I wouldn't count on that...also many of the scholarships that I was able to look at are all if you're going into a specific field and most are available to upperclassmen. If you can swing it, cast as broad of a net as you can and go to the one that accepts you (unless youre the lucky type to have more than one)

Many of the scholarships are also for minorities or PC, and aren’t very big honestly. The merit based ones I know of are pretty tiny

I wasn't really looking for all or none. Just some suggestions based on some of the criteria.

I really have no idea right now and just looking for recommendations to do further research on the school

Yeah. Like AnatomyGrey said, you aren't going to find a school that fits ALL of those criteria. All texas schools are required to have at least 90% in state students (my number may be slightly off) the only school that doesn't is uiwsom. In order to get a close match you are probably going to have to have some wiggle room in what defines those criteria. It's going to be really hard for anyone to give you a good suggestion based on your post.

I am willing for wiggle room. I don't need to have all or none.

The lower living costs, lower tuition, and live streaming lectures are the most important factors for me.

Hmmmm. Well UNT is good for cost I'm not sure they do streaming lectures. The things you're listing to be present are going to be more competitive schools. Where are your stats at? Have you used the LizzyM calculator? That'll help you narrow down schools to sift through. You can choose 7 schools but if you're not competitive at any of them you just spent a lot of money for nothing. That being said, check out OSU, BCOM, ARCOM, and Touro. Those are some schools you might be interested. I'm not sure if they meet enough of your criteria to be worth it but you're going to be doing A LOT of research on schools. Only you are going to know who is really worth it, and often much of what you started out thinking will change as you gain more info. You got a lot of leg work to do. Good.luck!

Thanks! Haven't taken MCAT yet. MY GPA is 3.97. 3.98 at community college (3 years) and 3.957 at 4-year schools (1.5 years)

I have probably 100 volunteer hours, but working on getting at least 50 hours shadowing by June.

That's a solid GPA and while it's good to start thinking about schools I highly recommend spending the vast majority of your time prepping for the MCAT. That exam is going to dictate your options. Make sure you develop at least one quality EC as well for good measure

If I do well I am very hopeful about schools I can get into. I am basically not working and doing limited volunteer hours (2-4 hours every other week or every week) and the rest is MCAT study. I'm doing a lot of practice exams to identify my weaknesses

Super solid GPA but like another poster said without a MCAT it's hard to tell. Any reason in particular you are looking at DO? Taken any full length practices?

OP, fellow Wisconsinite here, will be happily attending a DO program in July (obviously OOS since we don't have an in-state program). If you have a near-perfect GPA, then my advice to you would be to murder the MCAT. Murder it hard, if it requires a GPA hit then for the love of God take it. You can afford to drop down to a 3.8 if it gets you a 510 on the MCAT, that will look far better than a 4.0 with a 498 (not saying that's going to happen to you). Apply to UW-Madison, in-state tuition is super cheap, then add some lower/mid-tier MD programs in locations you wouldn't mind living, sprinkle in a few reaches, and then add some DO schools that are old, with established rotations that won't severely limit your ability to match competitive specialties (DMU, AT-Still, Kansas City, I would say CCOM but it is very expensive).

Apply broadly, but do not squander that fantastic GPA with a low MCAT, that will be the key to your success. A low GPA from mistakes made nearly a decade ago weighted down my application tremendously.

WVSOM has all of the bolded above. I don't know of any OOS DO programs that are low tuition, nor allow you to get in-state tuition.

WVSOM has a dirt cheap COL, lectures are almost uploaded immediately after they end, they have a solid reputation for what I can tell. They love OOS applicants (I'm OOS, myself). And we get emails frequently about scholarships to apply for.

Message me if you have questions!

Would about AT- Still?

Honestly man forget about DO schools and just focus on the MCAT. If you get 508 or higher then I would have your first cycle be all MD.

Agree. You have a very good GPA and community college isn't really a problem. Focus on that MCAT. There's is 100% no reason to pick any DO school over any MD school. It's very simple.

Yeah. I agree with Anatomy and Rekt. There nothing wrong with being or becoming a DO but if you can swing the academic numbers for MD then that's what you should be doing as it puts you at an advantage when its time for residency match.

I have a high regard for the following:
KCU
MUCOM
NYITCOM
PCOM
VCOM
KCOM
DMU
Touro-CA
Western-both
WVSOM

Umm LECOM is low in tuition and has plenty of OOS students. The lectures aren't recorded though.

OP, you really can't rule in or out any DO programs yet, because you need your MCAT. Applying DO might be unnecessary or you might only need a handful of DO programs, or you might need to apply to 1/2 or 2/3 of them because your MCAT is so low. When you have the score, then come back.

ATSU Soma fits almost all of those but I'd imagine not the scholarships because... you know... DO school . Oh and not in state tuition either because it's private

KCU rocked it with boards this last year, I wouldn't knock it out just because it is in the midwest.

Agree with both of the above. I’m not sure what you’re looking for exists, but you won’t know how picky you should or shouldn’t be until you have an MCAT score.

I will say the IS/OOS part is kind of irrelevant; most of the state schools dramatically favor their own residents anyway, and the private schools may have some regional bias but don’t care where you’re from tuition-wise.

In my opinion, not the right way to approach this. Apply to as many schools as you can, get accepted, THEN weigh your options. Even if we named a perfect school, if you don’t get in then there’s no point.

But make sure to apply to schools you would go to IF that was your only acceptance!

CUSOM UNECOM PCOM VCOM NSUCOM were my choices to stay by the east coast.
