hey, i don't see a thread for this. So can some third years post what books (or equipment) they recommend getting for third year? All i've heard is maxwell and maybe a clipboard.

I don't have an iphone so... keep that in mind with your recommendations. (i'm trying really hard not to because i can't really afford it)

Thanks for your time!

lul, wut? you couldn't find any threads about this anywhere on this forum?

Look at the stickies on the top of the page. There, you will find your way young tadpole.

Ya.....but most are dated by 2+ years.

then look at the most recent shelf exam threads that are everywhere for tips.

Yep, that's what I did/recommend over the old stickied book threads.

Get Pocket Medicine

Is a smartphone coming your way in near future? If not, then I know there are a couple of pharmacopeia books out there but honestly having epocrates or medscape on your phone is much better than carrying a small book around

I hear Step Up to medicine is a good one to have too

Step Up to Medicine is an excellent book for FM, Medicine, and a few of the other rotations. It's also a great resource for Step 2.

I got Pocket Medicine and never used it. Useless.

Might as well buy Step Up to Medicine, everyone uses it for IM. Could also buy NMS Case Book, since most people will use that for Surgery.

Otherwise, I will reiterate what others have said...check the Shelf specific threads for advice as you go along M3 year. Good luck!

I've heard Step Up is the "standard" for IM also. I do have a follow up question that I had trouble figuring out after reading the stickies..do most people do World + MKSAP or just one or the other? The older threads don't seem to mention World so it's just confusing. Given that my IM rotation is only 6 weeks (IM 1), I don't understand how it's possible people get through that amount of material.

Smartphone or IpodTouch = Epocrates-----rarely use it but sometimes good to have handy when looking up trade names

Boards and Wards is good but is pretty heavy to carry around

The MGH Pocket Medicine book is crucial for most of your services but note that it's not often the most up to date and is nice to check what they recommend.

I wouldn't recommend much more to carry around before your jacket starts to weigh more than you do.

MSKAP is considered good for day-to-day stuff on the wards. UW is considered good for the Shelf and Step 2.
