Recommended Coffees for Non-Coffee Drinkers?

Does anyone have any recommendations of types of coffees to try for people that haven't ever liked coffee or really haven't ever tried it before except once or twice as a kid at your parents' coffee pot? You can use specific menu items from Starbucks if you want since there's one close to where I live.

I like the Frappucinos by Starbucks but what else is there that is like a "transition-coffee" for those people who are not yet addicted to the taste?

I'm finding I need a "pick-me-up" for studying and focusing in class and I'm tired of just trying to chug down Mountain Dews for the caffeine high. It's hard to stay focused in lectures starting at 8 AM! Any help would be appreciated.

i hate real coffee, but i like cafe mochas and french vanilla cappuchinos.
 
At Starbucks, or anywhere for that matter, lattes are a good transition coffee ... they have a shot of espresso and a lot of milk. They are usually pretty good at keeping me up (if i drink them late enough). If you want it sweet, try a vanilla latte or a caramel macchiato. They're pretty light on coffee, but have the taste and might help you get used to it.

My boyfriend says they're girly drinks though (probably cuz they're so light 😛).

if you mean, more "milky or "creamy", contrary to what real BLACK coffee is--then you gotta absolutely try White mocha or Caramal machiado. White mocha is much sweeter--so mite wanna try the caramel machiado--o yea, this is from starbucks
 
Why don't you try tea? There are tons of great teas out there with just as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. I carry tea bags around in my front pocket because I can get hot water from the cafeteria for free. Added bonus!

Don't like tea at all! Okay, so there's some good starters out there for me to try. Can this stuff be home-brewed or is it only good from Starbucks or a similar establishment?
 
Try a Misto (Meesto-pronunciation) from Starbucks. It is the equivalent of a cafe au lait and a bit more mild than a latte.... it is coffee and milk.. not espresso. And if you want to kill the coffee taste a bit more, hit it with a shot of raspberry or something strong and tasty.

I but the powdered mixes and make my cafe mochas and cappuchinos at home. They taste just as good as if I had bought it from Starbucks.
 
Cappuccino is really good. You should give it a try. They sell it dirt cheap at shell stations (or is it Exxon, I forget).
 
I never liked coffee until I tried Dunkin Donuts coffeeas a junior in college. Now I'm hopelessly hooked!

I adore Dunkin Donuts. The Dunkacinos (spelling?) would probably appeal to a non-coffee drinker. Just ask for lots of sugar. 😛
 
If you don't like coffee, don't drink it. There's no point in getting addicted to a drink you don't even like. Plenty of people are trying to stop drinking coffee. Plus those Starbucks fancy coffees are pretty calorie loaded I've heard. I've made it through med school without drinking coffee. Get more sleep and keep drinking those Mountain Dews!
 
Just use caffeine pills when you need it, none of the sugar of soft drinks and your breath wont smell like ass from coffee.

Yep mountain dews make you piss like a racehorse. That's why coffee is way better. If you want some cool cofees, go to grocery store, they usually have some flavored cofees, like vanilla flavor, mocca flavor, cappucinoo flavor. Those are pretty good if you don't like the "regular" cofee.

What about these coffees I've heard about that you just mix with milk and it's a cold coffee?
 
the best "coffee" is Indian spiced tea or 'chai'. It's made with milk so it's not as strong as black coffee, but it tastes excellent.
 
White mochas from Starbucks are soooo incredibly yummy. Either hot or frappucino. I had one today 😀
 
For a once-in-a-while treat, Thai iced coffee or iced tea is really good. Coconut milk makes almost anything delicious!

(speaking of which, definitely mind the fat/calorie count in those fancy fluffy coffees at dunkin donuts and starbucks. mountain dew isn't much better. i think starbucks has some new light fraps - no starbucks in botswana, so i'm not sure.)
 
Forget coffee--once your hooked, the high diminishes and crash escalates. After 30 days of being off coffee, I had more energy and even could get jittery on my own neurotransmitters.

If you have to go for a tasty caffeine buzz, go for chocolate. Chocolate covered espresso beans will get you pretty wired. 😴
 
i always drink coffee black (because i find that sugar and cream can alter the taste), so i'm pretty picky. to be honest, the Starbucks coffees are nothing special... most of the beans are roasted beyond recognition. the only one i like is the Christmas blend (aromatic and pleasantly spicy), though that's only available a month out of the year. i would suggest Dean & Deluca (deandeluca.com); they make some really good blends. try the House Blend or SoHo Blend using a french press... it blows anything you can get from a franchise out of the water.
 
I agree with fielight about Starbucks overroasting their coffee beans. I like coffee, but can't stand a regular cup of coffee from Starbucks. It's absolutely disgusting. Personally, I am VERY picky about the amount of cream and sugar in my coffee. I need a lot of cream and sugar/Splenda (or fat-free coffeemate) or else I can't stand the taste of coffee. Once I figured out how much cream and sugar to put in, I became a coffee addict. 🙂
 
if you order dunkin donuts coffee with cream and sugar (ie they put in the cream and sugar for you), its seriously not even coffee...you should see the color it turns out. it looks like chocolate milk or something, and its freakin delicious. even better is their french vanilla coffee with cream and sugar. mmm....
its kind of fattening though, especially for a beverage, so i have switched to putting splenda and 2% milk in it, and its still pretty tasty.
 
Tetley's British Blend tea with a touch of milk and sugar. The real English stuff. I never touched a cup of coffee before that, and now I'm a true caffeine addict.

Start chugging black coffee when you need to stay up and you will eventually like the taste. No sugar either; black coffee and unsweetened tea are the healthiest caffeinated drinks around.

Light roast = higher caffeine content, and easier to ease into a coffee habit. So, start with the small size. Starbucks has a "blonde" roast that's lighter than the house blend, almost always available.

I highly prefer Dunkin Donuts over Starbucks. At DD, I love their normal coffee with cream and sugar. If you're easing into it, say "extra extra" and it's sweeter than regular cream and sugar. Also to cut calories, you can do milk and sugar instead of cream. But stay away from fat free creamer and fake sugar, I'd rather cut calories somewhere else (~100 calories is not hard to cut throughout a day) than have a bunch of fake stuff. At Starbucks, I like lattes (with whole milk) or just plain coffee with cream and a bit of sugar. But I really don't like Starbucks coffee that much.

Once you get ready to do coffee at home, I recommend a small French Press (Target has a good size for one person) and finding a high quality creamer. If you like a sweeter coffee than just plain creamer/milk, you can use a hazelnut or vanilla creamer (not sugar free!).
 
Medical school has helped me find my love for coffee. Drink at least 3 cups a day at this point.

If you have a sweet with it (donut, cookie, whatever) it tastes even better.

If you drink coffee for the taste, drink coffee. If you just want the caffeine...take caffeine! Seriously.

For the price of one of those Starbucks Frapps, you get 60 pills, each equivalent to a small drip in terms of caffeine content (espresso actually has less caffeine content overall than a small drip)...and without the fat/sugar overload of a non-coffee-drinker's coffee drinks. Really, Starbucks drinks are socially-acceptable daily morning milkshakes, which is fine but not really better than pounding that Mountain Dew.
The caffeine tabs are easily splitable into 100mg sizes if that's too much for you. Plus, you don't have to worry about finding it, carrying it, finding it at 2am when your energy crashes, etc. Just keep a few in the Advil bottle you probably have in your backpack already. I don't know about you, but I've never seen anyone pull a cup of coffee out of their pocket, never mind enough to share with the study group.

With caffeine pills it's cheap, easy, always on me (I keep them in my car for road trips), and I find that I actually consume less caffeine than my coffee-drinking fellows, because I only take it when I need an energy boost, I don't crave the taste or the ritual, etc.

Worth trying, if you just want the boost. Cheap, easy, effective.

But is at as fast acting as coffee? For me a cup of dark coffee usually works within minutes to boost me up.

I've never drunk coffee, so I don't have a direct personal comparison. What I can say:
- It acts as quickly as a 5hr energy (minus the silly niacin flush)
- You're taking a full cup of coffee's caffeine content in one swallow, so coffee drinkers have told me it's a more noticeable/rapid 'on'. To me it still feels subtle.
- I've noticed with some of my friends that there's a definite 'omg this is a pill not just coffee' effect where they immediately amp up more than is reasonable.
- At the end of the day, it's still oral caffeine intake
 
Eleven years later, I wonder how OP's coffee addiction is doing...

For those of you that don't like coffee, check out yerba mate. I'm not a huge fan of tea ordinarily, but it's delicious. I haven't bought it all that often since I was gifted an espresso machine, but the sparkling pomegranate flavor used to be my favorite.

Before I drank coffee, I used to get the Chai Tea Latte from Starbucks. I still like to get it sometimes.
 
I am probably the biggest coffee snob I know:

1) Never buy Starbucks. The beans are burnt to an unrecognizable level and you effectively pay 20x the cost of a home brew for a very low quality product.

2) The best growing locations (in my opinion) for a new coffee drinker are Mexico and the west coast of South America. Caribbean/African beans are more of an acquired taste, but my personal favorite is from Ethiopia.

3) The one advantage restaurants have over home brews is the restaurant grade brewers, which are mostly stainless steel versus the home coffee makers that have varying levels of plastic. The more plastic (or copper) your water runs through, the worse flavor you will get, in addition to non-negligible amounts of potentially carcinogenic compounds like BPA. Keurigs are the absolute worst in this regard. The closest you will get to restaurant quality for a reasonable price is with a Bunn (roughly $125).

4) Know how the beans you buy are roasted. For any coffee you buy, visit the roaster's website first. You want beans that are roasted at a low temperature for a long time, versus high temperature for a short time. Think of it as slow-cooker meat versus grilled meat, you get much better flavor when it's slow roasted (and maintain the integrity of the antioxidants, if you're drinking coffee for the health benefits).

5) Always brew using filtered water, but you do not want to use distilled water. A common misconception is that you want the lowest TDS level possible, but I've found you get a much better flavor with a TDS level around 40 ppm. As long as your filter removes chlorine, you're in good shape -- chlorine (and other halogens) will heavily alter the aroma of the coffee and in my experience smell is equally important to taste.

6) Never add cream or sugar to the coffee. If you can't drink it black, it's a bad brew (or you just don't like coffee). Occasionally I'll add peppermint oil, but that's mostly to keep my breath smelling tolerable without brushing my teeth or chewing gum.

This is all, of course, my own personal (read: mostly worthless) opinion. We all like different things and the best part of drinking coffee is experimenting.
