Would you guys recommend an Art or Interior Design Major for a PreMed student? Also, does a B+ in a preq/required class look bad or hurt my chances of getting into med school?

Have whatever major you want. It doesn't really matter. If one interests you more, do it-- this is your chance for a liberal arts education. I would, however, consider taking a few (like maybe 2) extra upper level science courses, just to show you can hack it in science (biochem and or cell bio might be good).

As for a B+ in a required class... it's not that big a deal. Make sure you get some A's in science classes, but a single B isn't killer.

yeah I second domitian. if you can, do a quick search on this topic. it's been covered many times.... if you don't know how to search it's that blue bar that runs through the top of this screen. Click on search, advanced search and type in majors for title. you'll get more than 50 threads on this.

My advisor told me of this one kid who did visual arts from my school and ended up going to hawai... goes to show, you can pretty much make anything out of your major as long as you fulfill the preqs.

Congrats on your choice of major. I think it will help set you apart from the other applicants. Dom is right though, be sure to take a 300/400-level bio class.

B minuses are even fine, as long as your Biology/Physics/Chemistry/Math (BCPM) GPA is adequately high. Shoot for 3.45+ if you have public medical schools in your state, or 3.55+ if not.

I highly recommend that you choose a major that will give you a firm background in the sciences and a strong understanding of advanced sciences. So important if you don;t want to be lost in first year.

major in whatever you want as long as you do the prereqs...if you really enjoy hard sciences major in that....soft sciences major in that....humanities cr@p (whoops bias showing!) do one of those "majors"

Yep, I agree with what the others said, and no a B+ will not kill you. Remember, even to some of the top 30 medical schools, the average incoming is only about a 3.6. Now that is technically lower than an A-, at least where I come from, and still that's just an average! So just take courses in what you enjoy, and also, maybe do some research--that always looks good to adcoms.

Good luck

If you are going to do art, do something on the more academic and less technical side, i.e. don't do interior design unless you want to be an interior designer. Do studio art or art history. If you do well, it will make you a more attractive candidate for med school. Plus you will probably enjoy it, and you will probably never again get the chance to learn so much about something that is unrelated to your career.

If you choose art, make sure you have enough time to study for your sciences. Remember, as an art major, you have to be as good if not better than the science majors in their own game. I know a lot of art classes are spent in class and a lot of classes are spent in the studio making projects. Just make sure you manage your time well.

The other thing as a non-science major is to be prepared to work hard when the science majors are dicking off during the 1st year. Med school science is different from premed science, but science majors have foundation where it takes them less time to learn something than it does for a non-science major.

I would suggest double majoring in Biochem and Physics and getting only A's to show how smart you are. 🙄 j/k

As long is your BCPM is high, do good on the MCAT(30+), good LOR's and EC's, it doesn't matter what your major is.

just dont major in chemical engineering....

Actaully, I've read that non-science majors actually do better in med school because they are not as overly-confident like science majors.

Reasons to be a certain major:
1. You like it.
2. You are good at it.

Reasons not to be a certain major:
1. Your parents told you to major in it.
2. You think it will help you get into med school.
3. It's biology and you really like biology.
4. You are bad at it.

That's really all you have to know. 😀

now that we're being facetious. I would recommend a double major in Biology and Chemistry, and a dual minor in archeology and anthropology and philosophy--seriously, I dream about doing this.
