Recommended VS Required Courses

Many schools "strongly recommend" taking courses in genetics, biochemistry, and cell biology. Do you feel that recommended is really a "must take" for an acceptance, especially for those applicants who are on the cusp with acceptable GPA's or MCAT scores?

No, not at all. They are simply recommended because the school feels it will give the students a stronger back ground in the basic sciences when you enter your first year.

Wouldn't they prefer accepting students who have a better and stronger science backround? Less chance for failure making the school look bad?

Yeah but at that point everyone is a very very strong and smart candidate so they don't really care.

Major in what you like to study. College is the last place you can do that. You really like sciences? Great. You really like humanities or social sciences? Great too.

I don't understand why schools stress Biochem. I took Biochem and it was no harder than Organic Chem.Or Biology.

The pass and retention rates at medical schools are very, very high (95%+). This just isn't a problem once you get in.
