As the application cycle is winding down, I (and I'm afraid many of you as well) have gotten a fair share of rejection letters and emails. Most of these mention that there was a record number of applicants this year. I was wondering if any of you guys and gals noticed it as well? Do you all think it was an especially tough cycle this year because of this?

I know for sure at least 2 schools I applied to had record application numbers this year (at least thats what they said). I would be a little surprised if there were overall significantly more applications than last year given the huge increase they had last year from the year before. Every year it tends to go up a little, but last year was huge.

CAVEMAN/YODA EDIT: Had record application numbers this year, me know for sure at least 2 schools me applied. Me, a little surprised I would be if more applications than last year given increase last year was. To go up a little every year it tends, but huge, last year was.

Pro humble brag bro. You have 7 acceptances
This. ----> 14 Interviews, 7 acceptances, and only 5 pre interview rejections. Sorry, but IMO you have NOT felt the same type of rejection as most applicants. You rejected nearly as many interviews as schools rejected you!

Good luck NYC1990!

The past decade or more has had record applicants. It's true, but it's not a surprise. Last year beat the year before's record. It only follows that this year beat the last.

Mesa jar jar binks! But yeah, somebody should fix this...

I don't understand why medical school is so competitive. I don't get it -- it's a sh**** job if you don't really wanna do it.

Pre-Meds need to get over themselves. Nobody is trying to suck your d*** for getting 7 acceptances or for becoming a doctor in the first place. Well...someone might. Learned that lesson many years ago 😉

i think it comes down to job market and how important it is. Very few jobs can compare to being a physician and has such "certainty" when it is compared to other jobs. i remember hearing how in the 80s when engineers bagged groceries or in the early 00's when the dot com bubble burst and computer science grads were a dime a dozen. But there hasn't been a universal lay off of physicians (besides a few 'poor' job markets like rads and path). And with the news saying theres going to be a shortage of physicians and their pay higher than most, there's just going to continue to be an increase in the number of premeds and the likelihood of them dropping off will probably decrease as well because to be honest, what else can a person change to in this economy and realistically expect a job post graduation? Pharmacy is in a huge glut, as well as PhD's and law school is probably one of the worst offenders. Pre-Health wise, only ones with a good job flexibility is probably nursing and PA which definitely gets its fair share of applicants.

So yeah, im grateful for my acceptance as most people should be and am glad not being a reapplicant as each year will only get worse. Also doesn't help we_re known as the "echo boomers" and happens to be the generation with the most college graduates.
