I have just started my observation hours for dental school. I am wondering how to record my hours? My dentist told me to keep a detailed record of what I observed that day and he will sign off on it. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I should format my log, what I should include on it, etc.? I was also wondering about the amount of hours I should observe. The school I am interested in requires 150 hours, but if I decided to do more (such as 200+), would that make me seem like too much of an over-achiever?

Thanks! 🙂

You don't need a log. Most schools don't even care about it. There's one place on AADSAS for shadowing and all you enter are the # of hrs and the dentist's name.

I created a "log" when I started shadowing. It was nothing fancy though. I just use Pages on my Mac and write the date, total # of hours I shadowed, and what I observed. It's totally for my own purposes though, because I know by the time I apply to dental school I'm not going to remember how many hours I spent shadowing. And I think the more hours you have the better..schools aren't going to look at you and call you an over achiever just because you went beyond the required hours.

The more hrs the better. In my opinion it shows your commitment.

I think it's more important to build a good relationship with that dentist so he/she can write you an exceptional letter of recommendation. So whatever he/she asks of you, I would do it.

It's important to build a good relationship with the dentist so he/she will allow you to write the recommendation. That's what I did and boy was it an exceptional recommendation!

I kept a simple log of the hours I spent at each dental office shadowing and wrote down anything that I thought was a unique experience. By writing down your unique experiences you will have a good list of experience to draw upon when writing your personal statement. Good luck 👍
