Hi all!
I am a Penn 2024 grad doing a small animal rotating internship at a private practice in NYC. I am in the process of applying to small animal surgery internships/residencies, and I'm having a lot of angst about where to apply and my personal statement.
Persona details:
My ultimate career goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon and open my own small private practice.
I got a GPA of 3.81 in vet school, I've been involved in a lot of research (currently working on a manuscript for an orthopedics project where I'd be the first author), and I have two LORs confirmed: one from an IM clinician, and one from the head of our Surgical Oncology service. I am going to ask for two more LORs: one from the head of our Neuro service (since I feel like I get along well with the residents and attendings, and there's a lot of overlap between Orthopedics and Neurology) and the head of the Orthopedic Surgery service.
I enjoy the pace and caseload of my internship institution, and would love to stay at a private practice (the one I'm at now or another well known one) for surgical internship/residency.
I know that I will very likely have to do a surgical internship, and I'm okay with that.
My family is largely in the Northeastern US, and so I'd like to stay in the area, but know that I have to apply far and wide to maximize my chances of matching.
I am hitting a wall in terms of my personal statements and where to apply. Do any current surgical interns/residents have any advice especially about the personal statements? My current list of places I'm considering includes:
