So I just got the health record and immunization history paperwork that I need to complete prior to matriculation in August. Part of this includes getting a physical. Included in the paperwork I received is a form for the physician or PA to complete at the time of the physical--standard info, such as height, weight, BP, eye/hearing/reflexes, heart, lungs, etc is on there... but there's also a section for a rectal exam. I'm not kidding. Holy crap I wish I were.

Is this standard practice?? Why do I need to have one now. I'm only 23!

It's part of a standard physical. Whats the problem? Afraid you'll like it?

LOL.

They have to go deep to palpate your prostate, and do a stool guiac to check for blood.

BTW, the doctor gets a much more accurate report if he doesn't wear a glove: http://www.qfever.com/20030702/rectals.html

Yeah, it's part of a standard physical for men in their 30s... I've had plenty of physicals in my day (I played sports in high school and for a short time in college) and trust me, I've never heard of anything like that for people my age. I know it's really not a big deal, I was just sort of shocked... it's something I thought I could avoid for at least another 6 or 7 years.

LOL. Just wait until your first colonoscopy. Don't settle for the virtual, either! And don;t forget the sedative.

eeewwwllllll. 😱 that's so gross! :scared: how could they give these doctors a glove with a missing finger and than tell them to stick it up the persons ass?? i would never do that, it's just wrong on so many levels. and why would any physician participate in a study like that where they know they might not get a glove? yuck gross.... i wouldn't even want my doctor to go up there without gloves. that had better not become standard practicwe.

Ahh, sweet musiclink, so naive. It's a joke! I don't think there are any patients or physicians who'd be willing to partake in such a study. Man, I'd have loved to see the look on your face when you read that though.

As a side note, when my boss was in medical school, one of his preceptors who had been practicing since the 1930s had some training in Europe, where, in fact, some physicians truly did believe that any physical barrier between the wall of the rectum and the probing finger diminished the ability to thoroughly/accurately palpate the prostate.

Back to the original topic though... does this rectal exam really sound necessary for someone my age? I've just never heard of one being administered to people in my age group.

No man, I'm the same ole Jose Hernandez I've always been. Sorry if I confused you with the "female Jewish premeds" thread, I just like Jews (we gotta stick together). So yes I'm Jewish, no I'm not female... and to answer your next question, I know Jose Hernandez isn't a typical Jewish name. Well, my mother was adopted by a Jewish family at an early age and so she was raised as a Jew. She married my father(who's essentially an atheist) and so my brother and I were raised as Jews. Needless to say, we were the only people in the synagogue who had empanadas at our Seders. Hahaha, okay, I'm just f*ing around... josehernandez is just a made-up name, my alter ego so to speak. So to prevent any further confusion: white Jewish male.

It's amazing how ambiguos that statement is ...

My "boys" are always hanging out, but I hang out with my boys every once in a while...

Intentionally so.

Boy oh boy that sounds fun.

What are you guys complaining about? Stop your whinning. Girls have it much worse buddy, FYI. We get a rectal exam and a pelvic exam (PAP smear) regularly!!! What's the worse that happens to you? the doctor grabs your balls and tell you to cough. Oh! my god, poor you. Watch out for the crown jewels!

I'm not comparing my situation to that of females. I know y'all have it much worse off than we do. I was just questioning why I need a rectal exam now--I've never heard of one being administered to people in my age group. I've also never heard of women having to get a rectal exam--what, exactly, is the purpose of it? What anatomy do you even have back there???

LOL - well, you'll learn how to do a pelvic.

And, is it possible that the forms that have you so freaked out are just standard exam forms?

I remember when I was a kid (like 40 years ago) I was going away to YMCA camp and had to get a pre-camp physical. The form (for all of us boys) had spaces for a Wasserman test (syphillis), Pap smear, and some other things that pre-pubescent boys typically don't need or can't have.

For the record: The doctor doesn't tell us to cough when he's holding our balls. He puts his fingers near the base of the penis and asks us to cough. He examines the balls for testicular cancer, lumps, anything irregular.
