Hey guys, I am applying this upcoming cycle, and I wanted to discuss a red flag I have. I pled guilty to misdemeanor speeding back in 2022. I completed 40 hours of community service and a 4 hour safer driving course. I know I was being stupid that day, and have been extremely diligent in following all traffic laws since.

How badly is this going to hurt my chances? I have pretty good stats (LM 72), but I am planning on applying DO also just to improve my chances with this red flag. Do you think I at least still have good odds with DOs?

It's a speeding ticket, essentially. I think you'll be fine, as long as you mention it and write about how you've grown from it.

This is a nothingburger. Don't fret about it. In fact many applications will tell you to not include traffic tickets.

Your chances will be fine with do schools with or without a speeding ticket.

But as a warning to sdners in general, do not think that DO schools are more tolerant of real red flags, like serious cheating or criminal Acts, than MD schools. We take professionalism just as seriously as MD schools do.

Think about IAs this way. You are a current medical student and this thing happens (you get caught cheating on an exam, you get a speeding ticket, you get arrested for beating your romantic partner, whatever). What do you think the medical school would do? For the most part, the medical school will have a similar reaction to a report of something that you did before you were admitted as they might have after you matriculate. Some things will get you tossed out/expelled, others will get you a stern talking to, others might get you suspended or put on probation).

In the end, adcoms usually say, "would we want someone in our academic community who did that?" In the hierarchy of bad things, where do you think a speeding ticket falls?
