I'm thinking of cutting my EC's on AMCAS down to 10 from about 14, so that I can let the ADCOMS focus on my favorites (and the essentials like clinical experience) that I feel really define who I am. Do you think I'm doing myself an injustice by doing this? Among the things I was going to cut are a volunteer activity I did a few hours a week my junior yr, honor societies (I already have a scholarship award and honors college designation listed anyway for academic awards), and limited participation in the premed society (I figure it's a given that most premeds are in this club anyway, no?)

Also, I have an unused EMT certificate (didn't end up using it for various reasons). Do you think it is worth listing under awards? My counselor told me I should definitely list it regardless of whether I used it.

Any info, particularly from knowledgeable people like ADComs would be appreciated. Thanks.

The EMT is something you should list. However, definitely cut down on activities for Honor Societies-- it's practically a given that pre-med students have high grades. I had a similar situation like you with the honor societies and cut it down to Phi Beta Kappa and an award. I did not list provost honors etc. since being Phi Beta Kappa implies that anyways-- so list the most prestigious Honor society/ academic award you achieved. Hope that helps 😀 The club stuff is probably only important if you were president of it/ treasurer or some sort of head honcho in the club. Otherwise, it probably won't do that much for anyone.

A "given" ?? I think I missed something . . .

If all of your awards/honors/recognitions are currently taking up multiple categories, I would actually recommend that you consolidate all of them into one slot. You can call it "Awards/Honors/Recognitions," categorize it as such, and then describe all of the good academic stuff you've been recognized for. I think you absolutely should go ahead and list them all, actually...I've never really accepted that it's "a given" that all applicants have these things. If you have, you should list it. =P

I don't know. That is a tough one. I think it would be best to list all of the things you've been involved in just to show them more of who you are. I think the more the merrier.

Show the depth and breadth of your ECs. 👍 for the EMT though. FYI, I had 12 ECs.
