I applied to some hospital internships and none of them asked me for a reference list (it is not explicitly listed on my CV). Should I assume that they will try to track down my former supervisors to ask them questions? Is that unorthodox? My work history is research related (at other locations) so I'm not sure if a pharmacist at a hospital that is hiring me would try to figure out the contact info for my past supervisors? Don't they usually want to check with your references first? Any pharmacists who hire interns know about this?

Most prospective employers will ask for a reference list at some point. The references may vary depending on the kind of job that you're applying for, so it isn't uncommon for people to have a generic line saying something to the effect of "References will be provided upon request." On the other hand, if the application explicitly asks for references, make sure you include them in your CV.

When I applied for my hospital internship, I had a generic line on my CV. They asked for references and I gave them a list the next day. If you're going to use someone as a reference, make sure they're aware of it. You don't want to get caught off-guard with a bad reference...

In my case, I'm a P1, and I haven't worked in a pharmacy in approaching two years. For my PharmCAS applications, I had undergrad professors as references. I'm not really sure what to use as a suitable reference for internship applications. Should I ask some of my current pharm professors?

Like any "regular" job, even tho it is an internship, they'll want to check your references. Work experience of any kind is preferred, but if you primarily, say, did research in a university lab, that's acceptable. The main reason they want a reference is because someone needs to vouch for you as someone who's not a ****bag and will be a reasonable employee, and later on it serves as a "who do you know" in pharmacy.

edit: plus espeically at a hospital, it's a large corporation as a whole and usually HR dictates standard hiring rules regardless of rph/tech/intern position, so i assume most will actually call references to make sure they exist and are real. because really, if you were doing hiring and you didn't do that, you really wouldn't have much of a job.

ya but they didn't ask me for references (& it isn't listed on my resume)- so do you think they will go & try to look up the contact info of my previous employers in order to ask them questions??
