I am on the job hunt and wondering who I should ask to be my reference. Would old coworkers be enough or do I need a manager? Are references routinely checked in hospital pharmacy or LTC?

Usually, they need a couple 2-3 managers + 2 subordinates... All managers are fine too. Higher ups carry more weight.

Big institution will make your references fill out a survey online + some essay about you by email.

Depends on how lazy your boss/HR is.

Pharmacists who trained you while you were starting are good, other pharmacists you've worked with, the managers are best. I still use pharmacy school preceptors for some recommendations, esp if they work in the hospital that I'm applying to.

Recently, every hospital I've applied to uses SkillSurvey for reference checking. You enter the e-mails of the people you want as your references along with the rest of their information, hit send and they get e-mails right away. I tell them to just check off max rating on everything. They have a little essay section about strengths and weaknesses that they don't have to complete but I imagine it helps if they complete the strengths section but make sure they aren't dumb****s who will put something that torpedoes your application.

One guy on my reference put this in the strength section, "Sparda would be an amazing boss, he is so nice to the techs/interns. He lets them take as many breaks as they want and does their work for them quite a lot."

That was for an assistant director position that I interviewed for. God damn it.

Old coworkers should be fine. When I got a job at CVS they asked for one reference and they never even called him. Some places ask for 2-3 but might just all one guy.

From my experience, references are checked after they offer you the job. Of course, in America they can take it away at any time, but I assume if the references are average or above, it wouldn't be a disqualifier. Often, HR doesn't really know the difference between titles.

Do companies still do reference checks?
