I'll begin my first professional year of Pharm school in a little over a month from now. I wanted to know if you guys have any suggestions for reference materials and/or study guides, etc. that might be useful beyond the required textbooks in my courses. My courses will be:

Biochem, Medicinal Chem, Physiology, Drug Delivery, and Intro to Pharmacy Practice.

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like the usual array of courses that lighten every 1st year's doorway 😀 ....just kidding, you'll have fun in Rx school--study hard and make alot of friends.

Be cautious of external sources since many of them present the material even more convoluted than the primary text itself. Keep an eye out for review books that are handy to have that you can carry throughout your Rx school years. There are comprehensive Pharmacy Review Books that can explain some concepts through a different approach that may inevitably help you get a better understanding of the topic. Also, if possible, borrow the book from the library before purchase to ensure it's worth versus just $50 you'll never see again.

Comprehensive Pharmacy Review Edited by Shargel, Mutnick,Souney, and Swanson (the editors may have changed on the newer addition but it's a relatively thick paperback ~700+ pages that gives thorough glimpse into almost every subject taught in Rx school) it's put out by Lippinott, Williams and Wilkins. (publishers)

Medicinal Chem--see if you can get your hands on a good paperback ref called Review of Organic Functional Groups: Intro to Medicinal Organic Chem by Thomas Lemke

Physiology and BChem: you may peruse some of the medical review texts out there and see what works for you (Lippincott often puts out some good review/reference texts) From personal experience, class notes were often the primary source of test material and often sufficient to gain understanding of the particular topic (with the textbook as a reference)

Intro to Rx PRactice- is often a medical terminology/communications course--no real need to get anything for this one

Drug Dosage delivery- the notes from class lectures will suffice and probably be the only source you will want to read since this course (while you will learn many good clinical pearls from) is perhaps one of the most mundane courses you will take in your life. Still, though, pay attention because there will be things you will find useful later

hope this helps..
