I have been accepted to med. school for 2003, but the thing is that I have not even thought about anything "hardcore" science related since studying for the MCAT last August (I graduated as a psych major in 2001).
So my question is, do you think it would help to take an undergrad science class this semester just to get my brain back into the swing of things? I feel like every bit of info I jammed in my head for the MCAT is long forgotten. I was thinking of something like genetics, or immunochemistry (something that would help a bit in med school). Anyone else doing/thinking of doing the same? Will it actually help?

I'm sort of in the same boat. I graduated in 2000, and took the MCAT this past August.

I've been reading over an embryology book and a few review books, just to exersize my brain. I haven't really done any hardcore studying yet, but I'll probably try and get a head start on my first semester classes once I figure out where I'm going.

The best advice I've heard is to do absolutely nothing the summer before medical school. You're going to be working your butt off for the next four years, so enjoy the summer. Catch up on sleep, get a tan, do all the things you won't have a chance to in the coming years.

Ditto to sponch--that is exactly my plan! I don't want to burn out even before starting med school. I'll also be resubmitting my AMCAS if i've gotten 0 acceptances by June. Pray to God not.

you're overreacting. enjoy a nice, long novel or two over the summer. most biology / histology / anatomy isn't hard to redigest if you've already had it at some point. if you haven't had a functional anatomy class, i might recommend that. but the fact is, even if you study all summer, much of it won't actually stick in your head until you're working with it every day as a full-time student. it's like washing your car before driving through a cattle ranch - just worry about the dirt once you actually get to it. haha - just make sure the car itself still runs!

sorry for the metaphor!

good metaphor odelay, but that's the point, I want to make sure the car still runs, haven't started it up in quite some time...😉

Any suggestions on good textbooks for biochem or histology if you haven't taken them before??

Wheater's Functional Histology is good...lots of pretty pictures. 😛
