Do we need to know these in depth? Chad only go over this portion very briefly.

Hi KoonS,

Yes indeed you do.....For example.....make sure you are clear on how to attack an epoxide under ACID or Basic conditions. Alkyne hydration is also regioselective..

Another example is if you have an alkene and treat it with Br2 and water . These are always types of problems that appear on exams.

In a regioselective reaction.....one constitutional isomer is produced over another. Is Markovnikovs rule an example of a regioselective reaction ...... The BIGGEST REACTION in all of Organic Chemistry ???? YOU BETCHA !!!!!!!!! This fancy sounding word is quite harmless !

so for alkene + br2 and h20, the OH group always added to the more substituted carbon while the Br to the less substituted in anti addition right? is there any exceptions we need to know?

No....this reaction is pretty much a clean hit or miss. We form the bromonium ion.....the nucleophile...here it is water.....or it could be an alcohol....attacks the more Substituted carbon.......to finish the job !
