REI questions: mid-levels? competitiveness?

Long time lurker here -- I'm looking for some answers to questions I had about OB and REI. I thought this would be a good place to start 😀

First off -- Is REI something that a mid-level would ever be able to "get into"?

And how competitive is it? I'm wondering mainly from the perspective of a third year -- is it sensible to say that getting an REI fellowship is comparable to matching derm, ortho, rads, ophthalmology?

I am also a third year, but from what I have been told, any fellowship is based on how you prove yourself as a doctor, during residency.

From what I have seen there are very few midlevel providers in REI. If anything, I think they would be a great help to a busy REI practice. A lot of REI is protocol driven in terms of ovarian stimulation and timing with egg retrievals and embryo transfers. I would think they would be able to increase outpatient volume freeing the doctor for egg retrievals and embryo transfers, as well as new patient consultations.

Many practices have NP/PA's very involved in patient care. They do ultrasounds, IUI's and pretty much everything except egg retrieval, surgery and embryo transfers.

I've worked with many who are very good. It is one of the more rewarding fields, in my biased opinion.
